Pre-race routine:

This was my first race ever so I really had no idea what to do pre-race. I figured I would just try to do what I typically do in training and try to relax.
Event warmup:

I had to go to the bathroom which meant I 200 yard or so jog to the porto-lets. Perfect, jogged down and got the blood flowing. Jogged back and then stretched. Just in time as the race started as soon as I was done.
Run
  • 2h 18m 56s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 10m 37s  min/mile
Comments:

A large portion of the run was on concrete instead of asphalt. Feet were hurting a bit and found some relief for about a mile at near the turnaround by running in the grass. That may have saved me for the rest of the race.

My right foot was and still is hurting pretty badly. Started after I made an adjustment to my stride around the 12 mile mark to work out a cramp in my ankle. I was barely able to run the last .5 miles but somehow forgot about it once I found my family near the finish. My son ran along side of me for the last .1 miles or so which was pretty awesome.

Passed lots of people after the turnaround.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, based on my level of fitness I think I ran as good of a race as I could.
Post race
Warm down:

My foot hurt bad enough that all I could think to do was get out of my shoes and home so I did not stick around long at all. Wife informed me that they had moved the car, a little further away. It was a long .5 mile walk on one good leg.

Event comments:

Next year will be sub 2 hours. Doing my best to quote one of my internet training friends...

"Puke during the race and you pushed to hard, puke after and you did not push hard enough, the perfect race is one that you puke right on the finish line." ~Maria

I think I did that, metaphorically speaking.

Great job on the race Brian!  You're pretty tough to do a half mary at this point in your training!

...and it can only get better.

That quote actually came from DanielG.  Here's the original quote :

"In a sprint, if you puke before the finish line, you've raced too hard
If you puke after the finish line, you didn't go hard enough.
You should puke ON the finish line." ~ DanielG
