Pre-race routine:

eggs, homefries, coffee. stayed in mom and pop hotel the night before. got maybe 4 hours of good sleep.
Event warmup:

in the water 20 minutes before swim. warmed up well. water temperature 54 degrees checked with digital thermometer. race app. said would be plus or minus 70 degrees. heh-heh.
Swim
  • 35m 40s
  • 800 meters
  • 04m 28s / 100 meters
Comments:

very cold water. would not have finished if i hadn't swam in one of the lakes in the area a few weeks ago. thought about bailing out of the swim a few times. had a right calf cramp all during the second 400 yards. gutted it out. a real challenge well met.
What would you do differently?:

stop smoking for one thing. do more continuous open water swimming. hard to do this early in the season. park rangers kept kicking me out of the local lake.
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

took my time on T1. didn't wear a watch. will wait for official results.
Bike
  • 1h 54m
  • 24 miles
  • 12.63 mile/hr
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

faster t2 than t1. didn't time my transitions.
Run
  • 1h 00m
  • 4 miles
  • 15m  min/mile
Comments:

legs and lungs were good. low back pain and running in loose sand caused me to walk a lot.
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

weight 212. need to get down lower. smoking. did well for a pack a day smoker, don't you think? leg cramp on swim slowed me down a bit. dragged my cramped up leg. loose sand running surface. low back pain from bike leg.

Event comments:

this was my first triathlon experience. i chose this race because it is flat and i'm familiar with the area. i finished near the end. there was no course marking and no one near the end of the run course to point out the way to the finish. the time clock was running and no one was there to record my time and take my number. that sucked. i had to seek out a race official to give my number and time to! all the refreshments were gone by the time i got there. that really sucked. i'm totally stoked that i finished my first triathlon! The plan is to increase my fitness level and maybe do another sprint in the fall. possibly cape henlopen in delaware. need to get some open ocean experience if i'm gonna do that. the swim was definitely the biggest, scariest part of this triathlon for me. cheers!.
