DA 7800 series is for 8 speed gear systems, right? If so, that's gotta be at least 10 yrs old then and you're asking $90 bucks for it???  Maybe my info is not accurate, pls give more detail. I am looking for a short cage 9 sp RD.

7800 is the immediate predecessor to the current 7900 series and is 10-speed equipment. The RD sells for $150+ from the big etailers.

I could really use an upgrade on both for my bike, but I have no idea if a short cage is appropriate with my setup. Can anyone explain when it is good to use a short cage?Thanks,Chris

Short cage is usually for double front chain rings and long is for triple.  The long can hold more of the slack generate from the range of sizes a triple has.
