Overcast
Total Time = 2h 07m
Overall Rank = ?/?
Age Group = 25-29
Age Group Rank = 0/?
Pre-race routine:

Apples for breakfast, coffee at Waffle House.
Event warmup:

Stretching.
Swim
  • 23m 21s
  • 800 yards
  • 02m 55s / 100 yards
Comments:

I had so much adrenaline running through me that I couldn't keep my breathing under control. Open water does not bother me in the least, but as this was my first ever tri I had a hard time dealing with adrenaline. I swam mainly breaststroke/freestyle and that pissed me off because I KNOW I could have been faster had I been able to do freestyle the whole way.
What would you do differently?:

Meditate/calm down before the swim portion; try and keep HR in check immediately before swimming.
Transition 1
  • 04m
Comments:

The run from the end of the swim to the transition area was ~100 yds uphill. I rinsed the sand off my feet, put socks on my wet feet (not advisable), downed a Power Gel, and forgot my gloves.
What would you do differently?:

Re-think the sock issue.
Bike
  • 1h 07m
  • 20 miles
  • 17.91 mile/hr
Comments:

I was blown away by how many people I dropped on the bike. I just couldn't believe how well I was doing. And that they STAYED dropped was the best part. The miles I've put in I guess were the best thing I could have done.
Halfway through the bike, I pulled out a Power Gel to eat. Ripped the top off with my teeth, tried to squeeze the gel into the mouth, and it came out the side of the package, all over my upper arm, leg, and the bike. That pissed me off.
What would you do differently?:

Not forget my gloves, figure out a way to get gels in my mouth.
Transition 2
  • 01m 30s
Comments:

No problems: rode right to my rack, hopped off, off with the helmet/ on with the shoes. I get to stretch my hamstrings when I'm taking cycling shoes off and putting road shoes on.
What would you do differently?:

Nada.
Run
  • 31m 9s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 10m 03s  min/mile
Comments:

One aid station at the beginning of the run. I was expecting water, I got Gatorade, and not the watered down stuff I normally used. Good run. Ended up doing 10:26 for the first mile, 15:00 for 1.5 miles, 20:26 at mile 2, and 31:09 for the whole thing.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked after the race, stretched.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Adrenaline at the beginning of the swim. It would have been nicer if I had been a bit more calm.

Event comments:

I had a great time for my first tri. Met both of my goals: Have fun and finish. I accomplished something today and look forward to the next ones!

I totally dug my first race.  Outside of the swim, I did better than expected and had a great time.

The best part was meeting a fellow BTer on the transition run from swim to bike!

Great race and an awesome bike split. Forget the gloves all together, they just slow you down in transition and you really don't need them on the aerobars. Congrats!

Sadly, not until 27 August, but I've a few road races to tide me over 'til then.

Thanks-

I did Macon yesterday also. I felt that if there had been more orange markers the swim would have been better. I have learned that everytime you reach a buoy you feel accomplishment. You and I must have been about the same place on the swin because my time was about the same. The swim is my hardest part pshcologically. So i am always psyched to just reach the finish. That is a good time for your first. Keep going!
