I believe my bike is 100% ready for the inspection and ride.

I rode the training ride with a 12-27 but after that I had the LBS put on an 11-30.  I test drove it on a hill-seeker ride and was amazed at the difference.  According to Sheldon Brown's gear calculator, my 34/30 is the equivalent of Jason's 30/26 on his triple.  Now I understand how he was able to keep churning up the hills so much more easily than I could.  I will still be slow but at least I won't totally destroy myself like I did on the training ride.

The LBS also trued up my rear wheel and it is MUCH better.  Imagine riding the course with your rear brake rubbing a spot on the rim the entire time.

Those two items and the taper should really help me.  For the first time since July my quads are not screaming sore.  I honestly have no concern about finishing but I know I am no threat when it comes to speed.  This is my first HIM experience so I'm going to pretty much do my own thing and finish this year.  My bigger goal is to finish a half mary < 2hr on Oct. 3rd.

Had my bike checked at Conte's yesterday. The mech did a thorough job checking shifting, brakes, tires, headset play, pushing on the hoods etc...
It actually worked in my favor. I built the bike 2 weeks ago after finding cracks in my Argon. The new frame had a bent derailleur hanger...didn't know it...couldn't quite get the shifting right...had Jason straighten it (he's racing SM BTW) and now it shifts perfectly....

If you were tuned a month ago you should be gtg but it depends how thorough your lbs is.

wabash - 2010-09-14 7:21 AM KYLE,
what exactly do they look for at the bike inspection? i had my bike in for a full tune-up about a month ago and replaced the tires last night.  do they just check for everything to be tight and secure, that you actually have brake pads, etc?  i would feel sorry for someone who shows up not realizing the extent to which their bike is going to be inspected only to have it fail.
just curious.
(if they have pre-ride the course, im sure they can understand the necessity)

I too did SM as my first half-iron a few years ago.  Good news for you... you will PR for 70.3 on the savageman course

And you are pretty much guaranteed to PR on your next HIM (assuming it's on any other course).

I'll probably get there a little later than that but I'm also staying at WISP.

I'm headed up Friday morning and am staying in a small cabin closer to the lake.  There's a big bonfire on tap for Friday evening if anyone wants to swing by for some octoberfest.

Heading out Saturday. Going straight to the park, hope to be there around 2:00. Staying at the Wisp as well. I'm a bit concerned about the late check out on Sunday. They don't guarantee it but said it "shouldn't be a problem".

Nope - opposite side of the lake... you can see the state park across the lake from my cabin (if you cut down the trees).

That's cool so you can swim to the start in the morning. Nice warm up. Just put your Transition bag into a garbage bag, attach a short rope around your torso and your good to go.

One of my goals for this race is to not drown on the swim, considering I have swum exactly twice since July.  So I'll skip the across-the-lake warmup thankyouverymuch

The bad:
 - I'm becoming increasingly sick through the week.  I hope it's done by the weekend.

The good:
 - I was only 1 min slower than my PR on a frequently used 18.5 mile bike route Tuesday.
 - Last night I had one of my best average paces for a 1550 yd swim than I have seen outside of an actual race.
Both days, I felt like I took it easy since I felt so crappy.  I am clueless as to how this is all going to shake out.

Duuuuuude. Lots of Zinc, echinacea, and vitamin C. Plenty of fluids. Hot tea with lemon and honey. Airborne. Rest.

sounds like you need a nice long dip in a lake and some refreshing mountain air to straighten you out.

Does anyone know if the pre-race dinner could be purchased during registration?  I'm pretty sure I would have done it if it was offered, but can't seem to confirm.  Or was it included in the registration price?

Are the tickets for sale on the website for bringing guests, or do I need to buy one if I'm planning on attending?

Last question - if I show up to packet pickup and find out I don't have a ticket, can I buy one there even though I dind't RSVP?

Tickets cost $25.  Participants do not get tickets for free unless they meet Champion Fundraising thresholds.  Tickets may be available for purchase at packet pickup unless it sells out ahead of time.

It goes against the spirit of the race and meddles with brick opportunities but would be great for the foundation....what if....you sold tickets at the bottom of KM for a ride up in a PU?

Maybe that could be a sign- "ride up KM $25" "next shuttle in 5 minutes"

I won't be attending the dinner and I'll probably just stay a bit secluded as I prepare.  I thought about the race and it's just not going to be enough of a challenge so I decided to do it with the following additions to make it worth the drive:

- >200lbs
- broken bone in right hip
- pink eye
- strep throat

LOL  WTF!!!!  I will do this thing.  At this point it's starting to tick me off.
