Baowolf - 2009-11-12 11:31 AM I know that people often do not leave their bike in their car at the hotel the night before/after a triathlon to avoid possible theft.  It may just be because their bike is like a family member and needs to remain on carpet when not in use.

well considering my bike is worth more than my car.... Smile

For some folks that isn't saying much!Smile

I had a friend that had his P3C with pm and zipp race wheels stolen out of tranistion as he was out on the run. Home owners insurance paid for the bike and the race paid his deductible. There was little/no security at this large, nationally known race and he will likely not be doing the race again.

Well I didn't want to post this at the start of the thread, because like I said it's usually a non issue. But since there have been multiple inquiries, here's a case of a guy that got away with tens of thousands of dollars worth of gear from both tri's and road races.

To add the majority of theft I have heard of is from things left in vehicles at hotels, no the actual race site.

in the toyota U.S open in dallas i had nearly all my things taken from me at the run transition site.  I had a waterbottle, 4 packets of gels.  All missing when i returned from the after-race "party".

IT was my favorite waterbottle too...... i was so upset....

I'm not sure if it was other triahtletes who took my stuff, but they had a bunch of track highschool kids as volunteers in the transition.  I'm sure they didn't wanna be there, so i think they just didn't care and were picking up random stuff to throw away.  There's a good chance my stuff wasn't stolen, just carelessly thrown away by some dumb highschool kid.  But still.....  i was very upset.

I have an external bike rack and it doesn't lock on the car.  So I take my bike in the hotel along with my bike rack.  It only takes 2 minutes to put it on, so it's not really an issue.  At the race I just lock the rack in my car..   Never had an issue.

I raced in an Xterra this summer with really slack bike pen security ... I email Race Director AND Xterra and USAT organizations and let them know about it ... race director contacted me and said he would do better next time. Remember that we are the customer for the races ... let someone know if something is not right.

I had my wetsuit stolen at my 5th race (third one this year).  It wasn't a great wetsuit, I bought it used to begin with and I really couldn't figure out why someone would take it unless it was accidentally.  Even so, nobody ever contacted the RD to let them know they went home with an extra suit.

Even so, I bought a new wetsuit and I don't worry about my stuff getting stolen at my races.  I think it was a fluke or an error and definitely not the norm.

During the B2B my buddy didnt get any stuff back at T2. For all unaware, they are to bring your stuff from T1 to T2, however, nothing was at T2. Security said, "sorry, guess there was not anything there" basically shrugging their shoulders and saying, oh well. Luckily, it was just the wet suit and goggles, no bike or anything. But, brand new Orca 3.8 really sucks only getting one use. It more than likely was just the race organization rather than people stealing stuff
