If so, how was the recovery?  Can you compare it to a stand alone marathon or Ironman?  Thanks!

I have not but a co-worker of mine did the one down in the Florida Keys (finished 7th overall).  His recovery time wasn't much different than that of a marathon.

Two BTers that I know, Birkierunner and Trixie, have done them.  Maybe they'll respond?

My wife just did a 50K. I know you asked about 50 miles, but I thought I'd throw in my 2 cents. She's done 2 IMs, 11 marathons, and recently just did her first 50K. It was all on trails. Because of the trails, she had MUCH less joint soreness in the day or 2 after the race than she has after a marathon. Her muscles were just as sore as a marathon, but overall, she hurt much less.

Everyone doing the 50 MILES in her race (it had multiple distances) kept saying 50K to 50 miles isn't a big difference, just a slightly slower pace. But I don't know what that means for soreness after the fact.

Happy training!! Good luck!!

p.s. My wife took all of 3 hours after she finished the 50K to decide to do the 50 Miler next year!...

How many days did it take you to recover from your IM....oh wait, it hasn't even been a week since your IM!!   Good to see you are already thinking about the next thing!!  (BTW, I have a friend who is running his first 50 miler next week...I'll let you know what he says.)

I did a 50-miler April 11th, 10 weeks prior to IMCdA.

Cliff's Notes:  Long training runs were 20--28 miles (4--7 hours) in Feb/March.  I did a 3-hour ride the day before because I knew I wouldn't want to do it the day after.  Finished in 11:32 (21st out of 85).  Planned for the week following to be mostly swimming and a couple short trainer rides.  Spun for an hour the day after the race and almost 2 hours a few days later.  Swam about 14,000 yards that week.  Here's the entry from the day after:

Jesus wasn't the only one raised from the dead Easter morning (just the most important one). Every part of my legs are sore (knees, quads, feet, etc.).  My shoulders are also sore today.

I could feel the fatigue in my legs most of the month.  No "pop" to get up hills or power into the wind on the bike.

Recovery will depend on how much you've trained for it.  I was in far worse shape after my 30-miler last month, mostly because I hadn't done as much training for it as I did this spring.

What ultra are you considering, and what would the recovery potentially impact?  I can't really compare IMCdA recovery to the ultra.  Because of the crash, I didn't push as hard on the bike/run and was really in pretty good shape (aside from the collarbone) after CdA.  Also because of the collarbone, I didn't do anything for a couple weeks and then spent a month running a little here and there.

i did ironman louisville this yr and a double trail marathon. the effort was pretty similar for each, but the recovery wasn't (for me). it didn't take me long to recover from the ironman (and i gave it a pretty good effort finishing just under 10:20), within a few days i felt back to strength for running and did a 50k three weeks later.  4 weeks after the 50k I went for the double marathon. as previously mentioned, the day after was like being a child again and learning how to walk. i had to take my legs pretty deep to keep running. i did run most of it and completed 50 miles under 9 hours... while walking the uphills. i think if i would have logged more miles or walked more of the second marathon, my recovery would have been better..

as a side note i did the same training for the ironman, 50k, and double marathon. which basically meant log a lot of fast miles and run hills when i can, trying to make the most out of 30-40 mile training weeks.

My recovery from one of the hardest 50 mile trail runs was faster then my all out stand alone marathon. If you have trained correctly the recovery shouldn't be any worse then other IM and marathons.

The only thing I found was the swelling in my feet lasted about 1 week.

I am looking at the Rocky Racoon 50 miler in Huntsville, TX in February.  Essentially, I would do this before the start of tri season and I don't want to wreck my tri season with a horrendous recovery.

My first tri race would be mid-April.

Thank you for sharing your experiences!

I just finished my 1st 50. What an experience!! Hilly and hard, but fun, I got the bug, 2 miles from the finish I kept thinking, " darn, it's almost over, I wanna do another." Emotional roller coaster.

short. my longest run was 33.4 miles or something around there. I'm marathon training and this was "just for fun". I also was continuing to do temp runs to help my speed.

My husband and I will be there!  I am doing my first 50k Dec. 5th in Bandera, 100k in Jan....I am pretty sure we are signed up for this race, too.  All firsts for us.  My husband did two trails runs on back to back weekends and his toes are black/blue-really really gross. However, he finished 3rd overall/8th overall...I will do no such thing Wink.  I plan to do a run/walk for my 100k.  Who knows what will happen???  We want to do the Arkansas Traveller (I think that is the name) 100 miler next year-but you have to do a 50 miler before you register...
