Subject: RE: Anyone do a 50 miler? I did a 50-miler April 11th, 10 weeks prior to IMCdA. Cliff's Notes: Long training runs were 20--28 miles (4--7 hours) in Feb/March. I did a 3-hour ride the day before because I knew I wouldn't want to do it the day after. Finished in 11:32 (21st out of 85). Planned for the week following to be mostly swimming and a couple short trainer rides. Spun for an hour the day after the race and almost 2 hours a few days later. Swam about 14,000 yards that week. Here's the entry from the day after: Jesus wasn't the only one raised from the dead Easter morning (just the most important one). Every part of my legs are sore (knees, quads, feet, etc.). My shoulders are also sore today. I could feel the fatigue in my legs most of the month. No "pop" to get up hills or power into the wind on the bike. Recovery will depend on how much you've trained for it. I was in far worse shape after my 30-miler last month, mostly because I hadn't done as much training for it as I did this spring. What ultra are you considering, and what would the recovery potentially impact? I can't really compare IMCdA recovery to the ultra. Because of the crash, I didn't push as hard on the bike/run and was really in pretty good shape (aside from the collarbone) after CdA. Also because of the collarbone, I didn't do anything for a couple weeks and then spent a month running a little here and there. |
