Subject: Business School Programs for a Biology Grad?

I'll be graduating soon with a degree in Biology, and have been (slowly) re-evaluating my thoughts of graduate school.  In looking at some of the entry level jobs that have been posted on Monster.com and other on-line jobs boards, I'm seeing that alot of jobs require business, logistics, or marketing bachelors degrees.  At the risk of selling my soul to the devil that is corporate America, does anyone know of any summer courses that are offered to indoctrinate non-business major graduates into the world of business/marketing/logistics?

Thanks-

Steve

As a undergrad history major now going for an MBA (I ask myself every day....what the hell are you doing?), I know I checked out courses at the community college by my house to get a feel for what business courses were like. I did take one, and it served as an introdution to business, I think it was called Business 101 or something.

Good luck, business classes are not that bad (except Finance, I am currently struggling in Finance Hell). I hope you find what you are looking for!

My sister was a biology major, and is now looking to switch careers (she works for a large company doing research). She is looking to become a paralegal or something. What's going on in the biology field?

I can't answer your question directly, but would suggest that you talk to the Career Center (or whatever it's called) at your school. They're typically decent at answering those types of questions. If not, I'll assume that your school has a business program, in which case you should go talk to either the head of the program or one of the professors and ask for their advice regarding courses, what to expect, etc.

Without trying to compare it to your original intentions, I know a lot of my friends got bio degrees with the intentions of using it as pre-med/dental/whatever. When they got into med/dental/whatever school and realized they didn't like it (or in some cases, didn't get in) a couple got a second degree (more school time and $$$$), while others got jobs as drug reps/pharmaceutical sales, working for the EPA, professional frog disectors - (high school teachers, which also required additional education), etc. So there are options. Your Career Services Center should also have a listing of job listings that's a little more extensive than what's on monster, hotjobs, etc., and be able to guide you in the right direction. Good luck!

From my understanding of Buisness schools is that they require some real world experience. I too was in the same boat as you, I graduated college with a degree in engineering when the job market was abismal. I had bad luck finding jobs so I thought I would market myself by appling to Buisness school to get my MBA. Most (if not all) MBA programs I found require real world experience, they want you to gather practical experience in the corprate world before you move on to getting some masters level managment schooling.

But, I have found that some local schools have some managment courses. In new york they are the state schools (SUNY schools, such as Stony Brook). There are some related to technical fields like engineering, IT and Sciences. You can audit them thru the professional development departments usually. Just flip thru the catalog, I have found that there are alot of these programs offered in the Summer.

I would try marketing myself as a summer intern with any major firms that you might be interested in. Many of the more technical companies are looking for people with science degrees in an entry level position than someone with a business degree (Pharmaceutical, chemical, medical, etc). There is always time to go back to school to hone your skills or pursue a different path if it doesn't work out. Marketing 101 - sell yourself! (and remember, falling flat on your face is still a move forward)
