We live in Houson so it's not crazy cold but it is quite chilly when my husband runs at 4:30am.
What do guys wear on the bottom when running in cold weather?  He has long sleeve underarmor which helps up top.

When it gets really cold I wear an extra sock.  Probably not that cold in Houston though, even at 4:30 am.

Runner's tights. I'll pick up whatever ones are on sale. I've got Nike, Izumi Pearl (No pad), Zoot, and a couple others that no longer have names I can read on them.

Keep them thin. It's easy to over dress when you're going to run.

Even in the coldest Houston morning, his legs should be warmed up after about 5-10 minutes. Keeping his core warm will do plenty of good.

Well he is already getting to the place where running shorts are not enough and he is cold.  I think I will pick up a pair of tights.

Cold to me means below 30F and I would run all the way until the mecury hits zero, but below that, I'll stay indoors. In the winter (which is almost half the year in Sweden... slight exaggeration...but not by much), I would wear a short sleeved compression shirt, compression shorts, runners tights, a sweater, a soft shell running jacket, a hat, gloves, normal socks and a pair of Gore-tex insulated trail running shoes. If gets to be really cold, I add a scarf, change to a long sleeved compression shirt and longer running socks instead of my normal short ones. If the temp is just around 30F, I might leave my sweater behind, especially if I do interval work.

Layering is the trick to dealing with cold weather and wind.

I wear shorts down to 40 degrees, then I put on the tights.  I do this for a couple reasons.  I think it is good to keep muscles warm and especially the knees.  Plus at my age and body fat %, I get cold easy!  I would rather come back from a run hot and sweaty vs. being cold.  I also tend to run not as loose when I am cold.

I'm ok with shorts if it's above freezing actually.  If it's colder than that, I will wear running/sweat pants over my shorts.

I'm more concerned about making sure the torso is warm and doubly concerned that the head and hands are warm with gloves and a hat.  I probably wear gloves and a stocking cap even in the 50's.  Nothing can ruin a run more than cold ears of fingers and toes, IMO.  Same goes with a bike ride.

UA Coldgear leggings have been keeping me warm in the recent colder spells - down to about 5 deg C so far. They also did really well in some monsoon rain, and were drying pretty much instantly :thumb:

Note that he describes it as an "EXTRA" sock - meaning there is already one there!

Reminds me of that old joke with the punchline "you idiot! you're supposed to put the potato in the front!"

My cold weather running gear:
normal shoes & socks
shorts
Some kind of base layer (back when I lived in the cold weather, pre-UA days, as a poor high schooler just a cotton T)
sweatshirt
knit streatch gloves - usually women's, very easy to find
stocking cap

That's enough to keep most people warm once they are moving.  removing the cap does tons for heat release - I'd go from being really hot and sweaty to freezing just by removing the hat.  Plus you get the neat head steam effect lol.

Last week I ran in cool norcal weather.  Mid 40s, could see my breath.  shorts, UA-like T shirt, and my biking headband/ear warmer.  By mile 3 of 5, I had to remove the headband...
Mornings might be worse, but here in January its below freezing early (frosty), don't know if its that cold in Houston.  When it's that cold, I've got to cover my legs.  Especially on the bike.

Runner tights are great.  If you don't like the ladies checkin out the "extra sock"  suggest shorts over the top.

Under 50ºF in Texas requires running tights!

We may be sissies about training in the cold but we make up for it in the summer....

x-country skiers sometimes shove a plastic bag in that area to keep warm in the coldest of days.... a good friend of mine is a professional racer and we talked about training (and for him racing) in the cold (FYI, it was -8F that day and that was not windchill), and that's when he told me about the use of the sandwich bag.... it protects again the windchill.

This is what I love about being able to train in Florida.  I have had tights from my days in North Carolina but have not used them in three years since we moved to Florida.  A long sleeve shirt and thats about it.  Even the long sleeve shirt is optional more days than not.  It is so nice in the winter down here you forget about all of the weather elements going on north of us!
