Subject: Could Leg Pain = Dyhydration?
I've noticed that sometimes during and after longer more intense run workouts I get pain in my leg(s) that starts in the hamstring area and shoots down to my ankle ands into my foot.  It feels almost like a nerve issue.  However, I also noticed that this pain occurs if I am a bit dyhydrated.  For example, yesterday I did not hydrate that well, then did a 7 mile intense interval workout and had the described pain in my right leg.  After the workout I hydrated and the pain went away??

I would guess that the pain is probably more likely related to the intensity of your workouts, based on your statements.

I highly doubt that a 7 mile workout in the Fall is going to dehydrate you.

I agree, I don't think it was the workout that dyhydrated me, but I was out all night (working not drinking) and didn't do the workout until noon so I think I was dyhydrated going into the workout.

Well, let's look at this objectively.

You experience the pain during/after longer, more intense runs.

You experienced the pain while doing an intense workout.

You may, or may not, have been dehydrated, due to being out the night before.

I'm going to go with the intensity level is causing the pain.

maybe I am misreading, but I don't see where the OP claims that a seven mile run caused dehydration.

lately, I seem to wake up dehydrated and if i don't put a serious effort into fixing it by my run I get a strong headache. it sounds like (or I infer) you are describing the pain as abnormal; not just an even burn that would be expected for a good interval session. sure seems like something more going on. the best way to answer your question is to rule out dehydration by being discplined at hydrating before intense runs.

Don't rule out dehydration.  I am  unfortunately an expert on the matter.  Dehydration affects people in different ways.  If I am dehydrated I will definitely feel it in my joints and sometimes my muscles. Also, since I use to tend not to hydrate during a normal day ..something like a 7 mile run could easily dehydrate me since I was probably already 75% there.  It could be the running and the intensity but dehydration could also be a contributing factor.

Good point, I have a hill workout on Friday and a fairly intense 14 mile run on Sunday.  I am going to really focus on hydrating before these workouts and see if the pain is present.  I've already tried different shoes (new ones and even different models) but have the same issues.

Isolated/specific pain does not = dehydration to me.  General fatigue and achiness in all joints does.

Others may have their own opinion.  I'm just giving you mine.

can dehydration cause DOMS or joint pain? yes. Was that the reason you had some leg pain after a 7 mile run? who knows, though it seems a bit of a stretch considering you said the pain went away relatively fast  and it is hard to tell if you were dehydrated to begin with... Still, next time do a better job at tracking that down and maybe you can figure it whether that single variable was the cause or it was more function of different variables, i.e. training intensitym dehydration, chronic fatigue, fueling, etc.

I am definitely not an expert...or even close...so take this for what its worth but I thought I would mention it. My son has experienced rhabdomyolosis...not from physical exertion but from other causes...but it can be caused by intense running and dehydration. I have spoken to doctors and done quite a bit of Internet research on it (mostly webmd) and I feel this could be part of your problem. There are obviously different degrees of rhabdomyolosis. It can be very serious if it gets out of control. We've been to the ER twice and both times fluids via IV remedied it.

I'm not sure about the pain description...basically my son's description is that his muscles are very sore and tight...like he just ran a marathon.

Again, I am not saying that this is your situation...just thought I'd mention it.

I'm starting to think maybe a sciatica or piriformis issue
