Hi All:I need some race suggestions. I just moved to Bryn Mawr and am coming out of a ten year retirement from tris. I never raced in this area and want to do at least one HIM in the upcoming year. I was looking at Musselman, Syracuse HIM and Savageman. Which race should I schedule? Also, are there any sprints that are a must? I am scheduling Got the Nerve, but really want to try other ones. Thanks

Welcome to the area - I work in Bryn Mawr. I think the Steelman sprint/oly is a well run race with a great course. It's early August around an hour away. I believe they also do a HIM at the same location but not sure as it's out of my range.

There are a number down the shore in New Jersey that are fun with ocean swims and beach runs. This year I did the Tri for our Vets in Sea Isle that was pretty good but not sure if it is a must.

I'm curious about this also.  I just got into Tri's this year and am trying to decide on a HIM for Sept/Oct.  I did Quakerman, which is an Oly/HIM in September in Quakertown, PA (about an hour or a little less north of Bryn Mawr).  I'm also familiar with HIM's Diamondman and Bassman, which are Sept and Oct in Delaware and NJ, respectively.  I hear they're both really flat.

Anyone know of any HIM's that run earlier in the summer?  I'm looking for June or July.  I have a half mary on the calendar in May, and I'm planning to do diamondman in September.  Looking for something in the middle.

Thanks.

welcome to philly.

the philly oly is a bit pricey but a very well run race in the heart of the city. there are a couple women only sprints here as well (Sherox and CGI racing). columiba oly in maryland is a bit of a drive but is a GREAT race. the black bear sprint & oly are up in the poconos but I've herad good stuff about them (CGI racing). I am a fan of the anthraicte oly in jim thorpe it's a small town oly but a really good race (and cheap). heard good stuff about the steelman races in bucks county. I am thinking hard about the quakerman half or possibly the new sorta half tri at chesapeakeman in MD.

scout 21 check out the belly of the beast half or bassman half both in NJ or the devilman half lite also in NJ (piranha sports) or spring for a community spot for eagleman in MD in june

There are several of us from Harrisburg doing Musselman in July (Finger Lakes region of NY).  This will be the first any of us have done it, but it comes highly recommended by people on this site.

I used to live around Bryn Mawr. You definitely have some good hills to train on over there and some sicko cycle shops. Another race I would suggest is the Sunset Lake Sprint/Olympic in Bridgeton, NJ in mid-July. Well-run, not crowded, and beautiful bike course. About an hour-and-15 ride from where you are.

I did Musselman last year and it was great.  Doing Syracuse this year as it fits better into 2010's schedule.  I live in King of Prussia, so if you have any questions about the area, where to train/ride, etc., just let me know and I'll do my best to answer them.

Don't know of any area sprints that are a "must", but there are a lot of options for that distance if you're willing to look over in S. Jersey.  Lots of the shore towns (or nearby on the mainland) have them throughout the summer.  Many are relatively smaller and also more affordable than things like the Philly races.  I'm a big fan of the Jersey Genesis (Port Republic, which is about 10-15min outside AC).  Used to be in late-July, but moved to mid-June last year.  Not sure what the date will be for 2010.

As far as HIM, I would recommend Quakerman nearby.  If you are considering Savageman, then you should also put the Endurasport NY (Harriman) HIM on your radar.  Another very tough course and particulalrly challenging as an early-season race in this area (mid-May).  As long as you are willing to travel a little bit and stay overnight, there are plenty of good HIMs to choose from in the Northeast & Mid-atlantic regions, though some of the popular ones (e.g., Eagleman) will already be sold out for 2010.

Bassman HIM was my first HIM distance race.  Flat as a pancake...freezing cold water....sandy run...good times

Thanks for the suggestions guys.  I think I'm going to do a sprint or two in the early/mid summer and take JohnnyKay's advice and do Quakerman.  I've heard really good things about that race on another board.

The Philly area has a lot of great Tri's. The ones I recommend that are within driving distance are:
- JerseyMan Half Distance (May) - Central New Jersey - 2 hrs from Bryn Mawr
- Black Bear Half Distance (May) - Lehigh Valley - 2 hrs from Bryn Mawr
- Quakerman EnduraSport Half Distance (Sept) - Quakertown - 1 hr from Bryn Mawr
- Bassman Half Distance (Sept) - Outside Atlantic City, NJ - 1 1/2 from Bryn Mawr

And then there is Ironman 70.3 Rhode Island - RI - 5 hrs from Bryn Mawr

Following up on the last post, Black Bear cancelled their HIM this year. Scratch that from the list (which would have been my first suggestion unfortunately)

Welcome to BT.

There are a couple of HIM less than 1 hour away from Philly.  JerseyMan HIM in May and Belly of the Beast is a late year race in September.  Check it out.  I have done the Jersey Man HIM twice now.  I thought the race was well done with the same RD.

I did Savageman HIM 2009 and loved it.  This is a very challenging race with very steep grades.  Savage Mountain is 7 miles long with several steep accents.  My RR will reflect my thoughts overall. http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=181806

Thanks!  I am shaking the rust off right now.  I been looking at Savageman and really feel like Savage Mountain is mocking me.  I might register for the race to show SM who is the boss!
