Just wanted to note that this is not the "Escape from Alcatraz" event (May 30,2010).

The "The Alcatraz Triathlon" is an inaugural event on Aug 29, 2010.

The lottery for for the Escape event opens up on Dec 1, btw.

$400 for the Escape versus $320 (minus $10 for out of state residents) for The Alcatraz Triathlon.

I'm liking the The Alcatraz Triathlon better already.

Tri-California (the promotor) also sent around a discount/early reg email to their past event participants.  Mulling it over right now...over $300 for an Oly (even with the discount) is tough to swallow, esp. since my wife may want to race it, too...but no lottery for this Alcatraz race.  Decisions, decisions...

LOL...gave my wife the link to the race page earlier today after telling her about it.  Her response just now...

"...you KNOW I’ll use any excuse to go to San Francisco, so if you want to do it, I’ll support you. It’s not the cost, so much as the description of the race... are they trying to get people to do it? Cuz the course description is NOT persuasive, IMHO... it’s like, 'pay us a butt load of money and then go through the tortures of the damned...' No thanks... I’m a sissy..."

To each his (or her) own, I guess.

(E.T.A.:  To be fair to my "sissy" wife, she is a marathon and HIM finisher...)

Wow... if I didn't have a fear of sharks this would be my new goal.

Scared $hitless of sharks and I still did Escape this year.  DO IT!

They claim the great whites don't come into the bay....

And you'll be concentrating so hard on not getting swept out of the bay that you will at least temporarily forget about sharks.  Sort of.

Maybe one day, right now I'll need to keep working up to my first Sprint. I'd imagine the currents are something else in the bay too; maybe Spring/Summer 2011 I'll move onto Oly's and consider it.How does one train for the strong currents of a bay? I could maybe swim in a local lake with a sail mounted on my back somehow.. (Filed under 'Weird ideas')

I plan to do one of the Alcatraz races this year with a couple of days to recover in Napa. Does anyone prefer  June over August as a better time to visit Napa?

Meh, sharks aren't a problem.  once they "taste" you and realize you aren't a seal, they USUALLY let you go...  Just think of it as a motivator to swim faster!

October is closer to the grape crush...
But the events don't coincide... honestly though, there's never a bad time to hit Napa

I used to Windsurf in the S.F. Bay all the time. I never even thought about sharks. I was tempted to sign up even though I am now on the east coast but it's a week after my planned HIM. So I'm still on the fence.

I also did Escape From Alcatraz this year - and all I can say to anyone who is thinking of doing this race is . . .

DO IT

you will not regret it.  I paid the butt load of cash to experience it.  We live only once and this is an event you need to do.  Very well run, fun course, great atmosphere.  Definitely go for it!!  Would I do it again - in  a heartbeat, just not 2010.  Other goals this time around, but will always consider a return.  I will be interested to see how hte Alcatraz event does, but i assume it too will be a great event

I'm in! My first Alcatraz swim and a great goal for 2010. Living in the bay area I have always thought it would be cool to do that swim. Well now is my chance.
