Great win for Keith and his team, although I don't get it from WTC's perspective. I would have considered Clearwater as the pro 70.3 championship. After all, there is no pro championship separate from Kona. Should be a crazy pro field in any case.

WOW! Congrats Keith. I am very disappointed I cannot do this race.

I am very excited for what this does for the city and region. This is huge for Galveston and the Houston tri scene. I said for years, before there was a race in Galveston (think pre 2004) that this is a great location for big events.

So excited.

(I googled the billboard and it didn't come up)

Well I am glad I'm already signed up as I bet some folks will now sign up just come see it, this will be very cool indeed and I look forward to hearing about the dinner, etc.  It will probably increase the cheer crowd too, and I love a good crowd of spectators--helps me out!

Very cool. Not sure if I am going to be able to compete after all, but now I will be making the trip down regardless.

smilford - 2010-02-03 3:21 PM This is BIG, and it's not just great for Keith and I'm not sure what Keith would get out of it really besides feeling more satisfied with doing a good job. RDs don't make much money. Maybe it's because I came into this sport as a fan and not to prove anything. I see this sport a bit differently than a lot of my fellow triathletes. Who have a lot of trouble looking past the 'me' part. Which isn't all together bad, but to complain about something like this? pffft. There is a lot good about an event like this coming to Houston/Texas. First getting any big event in Houston is a warm welcome for the local scene. Houston is rather watered down when it comes to talent in Triathlon, though it's getting better as of the last year, but still for the town size... not that good. Getting an event with a big prize purse with lots of pros will generate more buzz, more coverage in the local papers and news. That's good stuff! Really good stuff! Hopefully it will get more kids into the sport and we can see more kids like Alistair Brownlee come out and show us what someone is really capable of in this sport. The more we can get a city behind triathlon the more we can develop as a sport. Which primarily means better races for all and more opportunities for kids. Glad to see this, more so than an Ironman race. This and Gateway to the Bay are races that Houston/Galveston have been missing for a while, and we need it!

I 100% back this comment. Looking forward to doing Gateway to the Bay and U.S. Pro Championships Lone Star 70.3 IM this year. Congrats to Keith Jordan for helping the sport the grow!!!!

This is great news for Houston, and our region. Having a Pro event such as this, and Gateway to the Bay is setting Houston/region up for great things (both now and in the future).

Smilford said it spot on and I completely agree with him. Well said.

Now I have to figure where I left my autograph book.

we're getting really close to finalizing it Unfortunately, NOTHING is done quickly....

I do have one bone to throw everyone, though....

The San Luis Pass and the road in Brazoria County will be CLOSED completely to vehicular traffic. The cyclists will have free reign on the Pass and on the other side. Just got approval/confirmation from the Judge yesterday, and Brazoria County officials.

This is great stuff. The road on the other side of the pass has been repaved, and is great. You'll be biking right next to the beach, for 12 miles. It'll now be just a 1 loop bike, unlike last year.

Hopefully, that holds everyone over for the next couple of days....

I'm late coming into this discussion, but this is AWESOME. We all rode there traning for last IMFL and it was one of the best biking experiences I had had in a while. Hurricane Ike moved the beach around a bit -as in spread it way further back and over the road. So they came in and rebuilt and paved this new beautiful road that is literally in the middle of the beach. To your left is sand and then ocean, and to your right, just more sand. The area is very quiet and serene. We rode the last weekend in August and saw few cars, all going to fish on the beach, none bothered by us. Coming back over the pass, you will have to take the chance to look over to your right at the way the sun will be reflecting off the water. It is awsome. Then get back to business and hammer if home - you're over halfway there!.

I'm getting more and more info that Ironman is looking at a race venue about 88 miles North of Galveston (head up I-45). I got it from 5 sources now, all legit. Late April/May announcement.......

The Woodlands or Conroe?
Not that it matters to me, I'm only 7 months into this sport and won't be looking at IM's in the near future if at all. It might be fun to go volunteer.

Conroe?  Doesn't seem like an IM venue to me, but I won't complain!

Ok lets step back and think about this......Ironman is going to have the 70.3 in late April then do a full at the exact same time? No. Some might say oh well it's going to change from the 70.3 to a full. Again I say no. They just went through the trouble of making it the Pro Championships and then getting Memorial Hermann as a title sponsor. Maybe a venue switch for the half or something but not a full IM and 70.3 in the same city (basically) and at the same time by the same people. Plus think about Texas and how well suited it is for a IM. Basically it's not. There are a few months of the year that are suitable for a full IM. April which is when the 70.3 already is...and MABYE Oct and Nov. All the other months are so hot you'd have half the race in body bags from the heat.

Aaron makes a good point here!  With the Galveston event in the early spring and the TX climate November would be the only time that would make sense.  With IMFL, IMAZ and IMCOZ all in November and Kona in October where the heck could you even fit a TXIM in?

May and September would be too hot too. So much of the field would drop. Louisville isn't even close to as hot as Texas is in May or September and the race takes forever to fill (if it even does) just because it's in the summer. Arizona moved from April because of the heat and FL is November because of it. I really can't see them doing an IM in Texas. The calendar is too full and they are blocking the best date with their 70.3 in Galveston. They'll probably move the 70.3 north to be closer to the Airport or something. I doubt they'll announce a full Ironman. I could be wrong though : )

They squish races together all the time. they put two 70.3's on back to back weekends just a few hours from each other (Galveston and NOLA),  they put a 70.3 and a full in the same region in the same month: Boise and Cor D alene/ IM Florida and Clearwater, and within a couple of months: Wisconsin, Canada, etc.

I think Texas is as well suited for an IM as any place in the world. All locations have their pros and cons. Who would think that putting a race in a dumpy town will a bunch of lava fields would create such a frenzy? I am personally surprised that one of (or the #1 I think) most populated triathlon regions doesn't have an Ironman yet and if you look at the IM calendar, there is a giant gaping hole in the spring. The first IM in the US was the end of June until Utah came along on May 1.

I may be wrong and if I am you can kick me out of the TX group or banish me to COJ, but if I'm right......

Kona is a very hot race. They don't seem to have trouble filling that one. haha. Seriously though, early May in TX and most venue's are still wetsuit legal, temps can be warm but not too bad (avg temp in may is 85, and that's the whole month. early may is cooler). I wouldn't rule out a shorter than full race either, but that would seem odd given the earlier discussion of conflicting races.
