Universal Sports is rerunning it at 9 am on Christmas, and then a few times more the week after. They're also having a triathlon marathon on New Year's day, running half a dozen from this decade.

As for the lady that had the stroke - I don't think she finished. She stopped 97 miles on the bike - she called and said, "I'm going to scrap this race. I can't go any further" (unless if it was someone else...it was an older lady) I really was worried about how she was holding herself up weird, and her whole shoulder looked like it was all red and burned. :-(

Different lady, the woman who had the stroke finished, the other was a 70 something year old woman I believe..

Gotcha.  I couldn't keep up with the people and their names.

Ok...I'm pretty sure if you are talking about the GUY that called on the phone to say he couldn't do it anymore. Pretty sure that was a guy....he did have a high voice but still pretty sure it was a guy...he was wearing like a tank top that was hanging very loose  no sports bra... prop not too appropriate if he was a woman....

arcee52 - 2009-12-21 9:22 AM I can't believe they showed my finish.  My family and I were all totally shocked when we saw that 1 or 2 seconds of fame.  We have DVR so we were able to rewind because it was so fast that we looked at each other and asked "was that you?". That just put the icing on the cake for me.  I'm back to my Kona coma.

That's awesome, which one were you?

the coverage was great and i have to say that its because of the sob stories was the reason my folks watched it and called me that it was on tv.

it was nicely done and looked amazing in HD.  I think the swim segment with the Gladiator music score was pretty awsome.  my gf cried several times.  every sob story i would call her over and she would ball her eyes out then she would go packing the gifts then again.   good times.

I've got it on our DVR, I plan to play that same cruel trick for my personal amusement on my wife as soon as we get a chance.  She cries, I laugh!

I'm glad I'm not the only one that was confused by that.  1st I thought it was a man, then I heard the high voice and then I saw the pink outfit, THEN i noticed the loose fitting no sports bra thing, Still confused!?! Was ihis/her name Pat?

See, they said it was a guy. Then when it talked on the phone... I thought it was a lady. But he/she was wearing pink. ???? Although the top was rather large... so it wouldn't cover boobs.

I was so confused. Reminded me why getting really old sucks... cause then no one can tell what gender you are anymore as it all starts to meld together.

That's great he/she was out there though!

The only part I didn't like was the beginning where they showed all the people collapsing on the course.  And they had to take footage from a number of different years to put that together to make their point.  I don't think showing that is a good way to motivate people to start triathlons or just a healthy lifestyle!

Brian

I thought this too.  I think they were going a bit too far in an attempt to show how 'death defying' and 'extreme' the event is.

I liked the coverage, and was pleased with the balance of focus between feel good stories and solid race action.  I'll watch it again :-

2004 is still my personal favorite broadcast though, it just had awesome music.

Yeah, all of that was OVER THE TOP and unnecessary.

If they had to take footage over years and years... obviously it's not something that occurs with a lot of racers. Yes, it does happen, but it's not like every 5 feet someone is dropping like a fly.

CyborgQueen - 2009-12-19 6:36 PM  It's not the Champions that inspired me, it's those with the special interest stories. A few I wanted to say, "AW MAN!! Soooooooo close!" (especially the guy that missed the swim cut off by just a few mins - I think it was Kyle?)

Yes, it was Kyle Garlett.  Heart Transplant.  I wrote him today, extending my thoughts on how he's an inspiration to me (Kidney transplant).  He wrote right back with a very big thank you and best of luck with triathlons as well as "If you ever find yourself in the Los Angeles area, drop me a line.  We’ll go for a ride or a swim and celebrate life."

What a very nice person and very nice words.  I love that "celebrate life" statement!

Yeah it's been on torrent for a week or so now. Search for "Ironman Hawaii 2009" and you'll find it
