Pre-race routine:

Up at 4 for protein shake and toast, picked up neighbor doing the 1/2 and off to the race. Shorts under armor with run shirt pulled over.
Event warmup:

Sat in the AA center until the last minute - I was group E the last group, but being my first marathon I thought this is a day to enjoy, soak it all up.

  • 5h 45m
  • 26.2 miles
  • 13m 10s  min/mile
Comments:

Ok, what an event, thousands of runners - finally our wave or group E left about 15 minutes after the gun. Crowded for the first 3 miles, then it started to break apart. Then the turn for the 1/2, stay left for full and then it was to the lake. The first 10 miles flew by, then the next 10 around the lake. Hit the bathroom at mile 11, was taking hammmer gels every 20 to 30 minutes drank at every stop. My goal for this first was a 13 min/mile pace which I kept for the whole race. Second 10 miles pretty smooth, then mile 19 the hill, it sucks. Walked to 21 then started running again but I was getting a cramp in my right calf. UGHHH, walk again for 1/2 mile then started run / walking to mile 25. Coming down Swiss Ave, is very cool. Made the turn to downtown, ok we are only 3 miles out, that was the longest 3 mile stretch, my Garmin kept showing the miles earlier than the posted mileage, but kept pushing. Finally the turn to AA center, wow what a sight, people cheering, felt great. Finish then off to the house for a cold Beer, ice the knees.
What would you do differently?:

Longer runs by far. The longest I was able to get in was a 15 mile, you can feel the difference at mile 19 to 20.
Post race
Warm down:

Got the medal - all out of finisher shirts, that sucks, but headed off to home. Very nice event and the people, just unbelievable, just great!!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Longer runs

Event comments:

Great event, bands, home owners cheering you on, great to see some many people. Planning on the 1/2 mary next year.

When I did White Rock in 07, my Garmin disagreed with the course as well starting at around mile 13 or 14. My Garmin had the course at 26.59, yours at 26.53 - interesting.
