And the "airplane" thing that he said.

the point I was getting at was if it was a PAST TIME, meaning it is done regularly, wouldn't the airplane bills add up quickly? I am assuming these scuba divers aren't making in the top 3 percentile of income.

just a question - how exactly does one become pro at Magic the Gathering, and/or what is a pro Magic the gathering player?

WORK!
I found ways to integrate spending time with family while I train.  The wife and I play Wii on single player.  When it's my turn, I slow to a walk and play as she does her trampoline workout and when it's her turn, I run.  I play COD while riding the bike and I can play with whichever child is on the other Xbox.  My son goes to the pool with me.

I'm a firearms collector who enjoys going to the range with the kids (we love poking holes in paper)
I enjoy cooking with the wife.
I read a lot... mostly history.

I have an 8 and 10 year old, so when I don't train I am either working or spending time with them: homework/reading, skiing, sledding, launching rockets, fishing, video games, movies, even cooking with the kids.

I also have a date with my wife now and then.  And if time allows...I'll brew a batch of beer.

there is a rating system (similar to USAT rankings) one gains points by playing in high skill level games (big tournaments have thousands of people) and beating players with also high ratings.

I finished in money (most I ever won was $800 at a Grand Prix) pretty commonly, and the secondary market on cards is good enough (MANY cards sell for $100 + some in the realm of the thousand dollar range) to finance most of the trips I took to play.

On the downside, being competitive requires a team to test with, and 20+ hour weeks playing the same deck over and over.

Once one plays in a Pro tour they obtain "pro" status, but until you can finish in money nearly every time you show up, you shouldn't quit your day job.

huh, interesting!  Do you think Pro Magic players can get all the girls that Pro Golfers can?

I don't know about that overall.  First we are not talking about all divers, just triathlete who also dive.  So we are already at a higher average income.  Secondly diving is a somewhat gear intensive (yea!) activity, so to gear up requires some money.  When I am having a "wet year", I plan all my trip with a dive built in - last year for example, I took my gear with me to hawaii where I had a conference.  I only got 2 relatively shallow dives in, but it was worthwhile.  And the rest of my dives I drove to - up to 12 hours in the one trip, but still.

Of course, if the TSA starts making us take off our underwear to board commercial flights, I will consider taking up flying and cutting out the middle man.

Reading, volunteering, watching movies, and baking. The baking goes quite nicely with the training.
