Been over a year since the last post in the Victoria section, anyone else out there?

Been on BT for around 3 months now, based near Frankston and loving the training programs on here

Hi,
I'm out here! A bit north of Melbourne and I don't often post on here but often reading the forums. Would be great to have a more active aussie thread.

Oooh, Hello all. I'm from Melbourne. North Eastern suburbs actually. I've been a slacker lately and not been checking out the forums. Good to see more of us here. We should chat!
Oh, and my name is Tammie.

Hi, I'm from Sunbury, North West of Melbourne airport. Thought I'd try doing a tri so joined up here to find tips and use the training logs.

Hi Royston nice to meet you. What races are you intending to do?

Not to sure as yet, I've been cycling and running on a regular basis but I haven't been able to get into the pool much. Lack of swimming is holding me up simple because I don't want to drown. I would like to try one of the last sprint series in Melbourne then train over winter and then enter the 2010/2011 series. Run for the Kids is coming up in a few weeks and I've entered for that.

How about you?

Hi Royston,

Glad to have you hear - was going to suggest you could join me and a mate doing his first tri at Brighton but will clash with the Run 4 the kids - missing my first one of them this year to do this tri.

Good to hear there some others out there - will start some event threads as any I'm racing in are coming up to see if anyone else is going.

Thanks for the offer. Can't miss Run4Kids. It has become a tradition. I haven't missed one yet. What is the next sprint after Brighton?

Think the Western Suburbs Tri Club is doing a race on the Easter weekend at Altona - great series and at $30 a race is great value.  Done a few of these and sent some workmates to them as well when they say they want to do one - great club and very welcoming, wish all clubs were like them in Vic.

St Kilda Gatorade is on the weekend after Run 4 the Kids.  Let me know if you do it, might be there TOing on the day

Hi Guys. I'm missing the Run4 the kids this year too. My son is doing a kids TRYAthlon on that day. My next race is the XOSize race on the 21 fo Feb. 750m swim so I may drown also. I've heard good things about the WSTC and their races. Bit far from me tho'. I recently gained a new friend on facebook who is a member and it sounds alot of fun!

I saw your training blog Bondgirl and I really think the 750mt swim will be a breeze. Is there any chance they will let me use my surfboard? The Tri after Run4kids sounds good for me.

Thanks Royston. I am way happier paddling up and down the pool than open water swimming. I'm not scared or anything I just find them way harder!

Nothing beats preparing for open water swimming other than open water swimming.

Down at Bonbeach there are some good poles about 100 - 150m off the shore just inside the boat exclusion zone, I go there from time to time and swim between the poles (around 400m gap).

Otherwise the swim from Frankston boat ramp to the pier is a km each way.

If you're with the Knox club, some of them come down to Seaford each Monday night and do a swim just north of the pier there as well.

Cottoneyes - Thanks for the tips. On your advice I have looked into WSTC. It's not too far from home and certainly helpful.Bondgirl - I know what you mean. My previous experience tells me that open water is for surfing and pools are for swimming. I tried a 300mt swim in small surf recently and found it very hard. Haven't tried the bay yet but I expect it to be more difficult than a pool.

Thanks Cottoneyes. I have considered Lysterfield lake, it's a good idea. It is still quite a drive for me and I guess it depends on how full on I want to be. I also could just do more tris and suck it up!

I have been adding a few mountain bike rides to my cycling routine and I am finding it to be a hell of a lot more fun than grinding the k's out on the road. I am lucky enough to have Wombat Track not too far from me and Surfing seams to help my swimming. Does anybody else use other training ideas to break up the routines?

I'm with you with the mountain biking thing. I live right near the Main Yarra Trail so I can go for about 30k or so if i want. I haven't done it yet but it's on the list. I don't know if it is ideal training but it does get me out there more so it's better than nothing! Did a spin class today. I have fun with that also. All my road riding is on my own and I have to load my bike in my car and drive for 1/2 an hour for a safe place to ride. I have trouble motivating myslef to do this too often so I just do what I can.

Been told the mountain biking is great for improving handling skills, something us triathletes are supposedly pretty poor at Undecided

I'm still waiting to get a proper one, so at the moment have to contend with my hybrid which I have found does not have suitable tyres for proper mountain biking, but love hitting some of the trails up around Warburton.

Have also looked at orienteering in the past as something to put some more interest in the running, seems to be fairly cheap with plenty of activities around

Orienteering is loads of fun. The events are really cheap and the navigation really adds to the challenge. I have some friends who get stuck in to the rogaining too. They really enjoy it.

Orienteering sounds like a good idea. I'll look around my area. You do need a good bike for Mountain Biking, particularly if you are undertaking some serious tracks. --- I think this is now the longest thread from Victoria on BT!

I came to play Tammie!

Hi All, semi-retired Melbourne "triathlete" here *thinking* about making a comeback at some stage this year. Maybe Shepp HIM?? Maybe not. Definitely riding the 145km Great Ocean & Otway ride coming up in March and wondering if I can get my running up to scratch for the Great Ocean Road half marathon 7 or so weeks after that - if not that, then definitely another half later in the year.

Nice to see the Vics represented here! I look forward to checking out your progress.
