Subject: Time between Half and Full Ironman

I'm gearing up to run my first full ironman later this year. As it turns out, there is a half-ironman in my area 3 weeks prior. Is it a good idea for my to take advantage of this, and use the half as a final training run before the full? Or, will the 3 week recovery time not be enough, and end up hurting my chances of finishing the full?

3 weeks seems to close to me. I think you should be in the 8 or 9 week between range. Most IM plans call for a 3 week taper. I don't like to taper that long, but I don't think I would do a HIM. If you decidde to do it you will need to be very disciplined in not racing and controlling the pace. I wouldn't do it.

I doubt it will hurt your chances of finishing the full. But it likely won't help them either. there's no real need to do a half before a full. But if you do, I'd suggest more like 2-3 months prior. Then you can use the half as an intermediate goal before really kicking into your IM training program.
