Subject: Anyone from Carson City/Reno
Is anyone on here from the Carson/Reno area? I'm going to be traveling there soon and staying for 5 weeks to do a clinical. I posted this in the Nevada specific forum and didn't get any responses.

Any recommendations on bike shops?
Any great rides I should make sure to do? I know there is a giant national forest right there.
Anything I should make sure to do/see while I'm there? I've never been there before and am kind of going there blind.

Thanks everyone!

I am.... close as in this part of the country not much is close to anything else (200 miles north).  Reno is kind of like a dirtier, smaller Las Vegas.  So you have any of the casino related activities.  Lake Tahoe is worth seeing/skiing and is about 60-90 minutes away depending on weather conditions.  There is a road around the lake for a nice ride if roads are dry and you like elevation 8) or you can drive it or whatever.  There are a few bike shops, but I forget their names off the top of my head.  I would just do a web search and call them for info.  Sorry I couldn't be of more help, I pretty much only go their to use the airport... it is the closest airport to where I live.

I live in Truckee, CA, which is 30-40 minutes or so from Reno. and about 20 min north of Lake Tahoe.

Right now, your outdoor options are fairly limited. Both Reno and Tahoe have gotten a lot of snow, limiting you to road riding and running. I trail run a lot, and have purchased running snowshoes, but I've been spending most of my time cross-country skiing.

To answer your question, there are a couple of good bike shops in Reno. I'd recommend Bicycle Warehouse and Great Basin Bicycles. The Reno Wheelmen is our local roadie group, but I'm not sure how active they are right now.

Great Basin does computrainer classes, and although I've not attended, I've heard they're great and reveal a lot if you don't ride with power.

Since this is your first time here, you may be disappointed with Reno/Carson. In winter it's not pretty, doesn't have a great night life, and has few attractions that I'd consider note-worthy. if I were you, I'd spend as much free time in the Tahoe area as I could, learning how to cross-country ski if you don't already, downhill skiing or snowboarding (conditions are excellent right now), and exploring the great resorts like Northstar and Squaw on the North, and Heavenly and Kirkwood in the south.

The weather & snow accumulation might impact your riding for a while if you want to ride at altitude.  A couple rides I know of but have never done (grew up there but moved away about 25 years ago) ... up to Tahoe via Mt. Rose highway once the snow is gone.  Also check out Geiger grade up to Virginia city.  Lower down there's a ring road (McCarren) that is something like a 20? mile loop through/around Reno/Sparks.

Cool thanks for the advice guys. It was helpful to let me know a little bit of what I'm getting myself into. I figured Carson City wasn't going to have much of a night life and I had heard Reno was kind of a "wanna be" Vegas. I didn't realize that there was so much snow on the ground right now. I guess I better learn to snowboard/ski =0)

I'd also recommend Bicycle Bananas in Reno.

I'm in Truckee, watching the snow come down on the foot of new that we got last night. There won't be much riding outside right now.

I know you didn't ask about this but... if you're interested in swimming, go to the Carson City municipal pool. It's a short drive and a LOT nicer than Reno's pool.

About how much is it to go there? I would really be interested in going there to swim. I don't know anyone in the area so I don't really have an excuse not to get down to business and train hard for 5 weeks.

It's 4 dollars for the day.

The locker rooms are old, but clean. The pool is very nice and has about 25 lanes, so usually no waiting or sharing.

Wow that's a lot cheaper than I would have expected. I guess I'm adding that into my training plan.

Everyone keeps saying how it's really snowy right now in carson city/reno but when I look at the weather it says it's in the 40's-50's and when I look at the radar on the crummy days it's raining not snowing. Is it just that the elevation is lower so it's raining there but if I were in the mountains there would been several feet of snow?
