Subject: Race Registration is ALWAYS closed?
Okay, I am a newbie to the forum, but ready to run the "big" race. The problem I have is with registration.

It seems that every ultra I can travel to, or fit in my calendar is re-registered by prior participants and closes out to the general public immediately after the prior race (ie. Ironman Arizona).

How can I join the elite club of participants if the race is "closed" to outsiders?

When it comes to Ironman events for 2010 you can enter through Foundation or Community Fund Spots.

On the flip side there are several other Ironman distance races that aren't branded events. Vineman, Beach to Battleship and Redman to name a few.

Good luck and welcome to BT!

Silverman could be the play (despite the threat, it fits my calendar), thanks. Everything here has been amazingly helpful, again, thanks for the help.

The way most people who are not prior participants get in is to attend the event the year before they wish to race, and volunteer (at least for Ironman-branded events). Typically the day after the race, registration opens for the next year's event--  first to yesterday's participants, and then to volunteers, and then to general public on-site. If it does not sell out at that time, the remaining slots will be put online (active.com) until it is sold out. With the exception of one IM-branded race, I believe every race in North America sells out within the day registration opens.

Hope that helps...

Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on your perspective) there's a HUGE demand for the Ironman races.  There are simply not enough race entries to go around!  So, when entry for these races opens (usually a day or two after the previous year's race), the spots are all gone in a matter of minutes!

Sometimes, there is such a great demand that all of next year's spots are grabbed by this year's race participants, volunteers and spectators, who get priority sign-up immediately following this year's race!

Other than petitioning the company that runs the Ironman races to host more Ironmans, there's not a lot we can do about that.

However, there *are* Iron-distance races across the country that you can enter that don't fill up instantly.  You don't get the Ironman(TM)(R) logo plastered all over everything (which is good and bad), there are fewer racers (again, good and bad), but most importantly, they rarely fill up before race day!

Some examples:

Hopefully you're able to find, and enter, a race that is convenient for you!

Thanks, folks, you've been a big help. One other quick question; is there a "search" mechanism for the forums so I don't repost questions where answers are easily findable?

Again, BT is great, thanks for the help.
