Overcast
Total Time = 1h 16m 54s
Overall Rank = 37/126
Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 6/14
Pre-race routine:

Got up early and ate bagel with peanut butter and jam, tea, banana, granola, power bar and some cookies. I always have a big appetite. I can eat chilli on the start line. (Cast iron stomach)
Event warmup:

Had a free active release message. Wasn't really impressed with the technique, but it was fast and easy.
Swim
  • 14m 40s
  • 750 meters
  • 01m 58s / 100 meters
Comments:

Did not settle in for the first 3rd of the swim, dissapointed at the way I swam and my performance. I know I could have done better.
They announced that you could have a warm up swim, but then the race didn't start for another 15 minutes before my wave went out. It was too lomg paddling in the water.
What would you do differently?:

Relax and focus more on the task at hand.
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

Took a long time in T1 trying to get my wetsuit of my ankles. At one point I was stepping on one side trying to get the other side off. I stuck my hand down the one leg to try and force it off, not realizing that it was my timing chip I was wrestling with.
Took too long getting my feet into the clips after mounting the bike.
What would you do differently?:

Practice wetsuit removal and gettiing on the bike more quicker.
Bike
  • 40m 21s
  • 20 kms
  • 29.74 km/hr
Comments:

My first problem was with using the disk wheel, this meant that I had no way of knowing my speed or cadence, you can't mount a magnet on a disk wheel. I tried using double sided velcro which flew off with the first 2 minutes. I almost had to come to a stop at the turn around which resulted in a charlie horse in my right calf. I could barely gear back up without pain at every turn. I had to build back slowly until I could handle the pace. Dissapointing.
What would you do differently?:

Get a wireless cat eye.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

Seemed to go okay with no surprises.
Run
  • 21m 54s
  • 3 miles
  • 07m 18s  min/mile
Comments:

Was really worried that my calf muscle would sieze up again, I ran at an even pace the whole time without pushing it.
What would you do differently?:

I would have pushed the run if my leg wasn't sore from the bike.
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

nice race. nothing like running 7:18/miles without "pushing it"!
did you rent a disk wheel or buy it? can you put the sensors on the front wheel?

You wouldn't happen to be the guy first in line that I was behind to register at the Tomatoman -  you are associated with the local 'Y' tri training program, correct? I was the first one to snatch up a copy of the training manual back in february and it led me to BT soon after.

Small world! You SB&R a great race - also liked your ride - my wife knows jack about bikes but picked out your Cannondale Ironman out of the racks as a "real pretty one"

I bought the disk wheel a while ago without my wifes knowledge. I had to come clean about buying it before I could use it in this race.  Thank god she didn't ask me how much it cost.  I think I would have been forced to lie.   I didn't have the sensor on the front because of wanting to use it on the trainer.  I'm definetely going to reroute the sensor to the front for IMOO.
