Subject: census questions make no sense

I looked at a form today and could not help but laugh.    Question 2 is ridiculous in light of the instructions of Question 1.

Question 8 and 9:  Ok, I can understand why "hispanic" is not a race as people from "hispanic" countries are of many races.   However, my employees asked me what they should put for #9.   They are "hispanics from Mexico" - not white, not black, not affiliated with any Native American Indians.  I told them I didn't know.

I am OK telling the government of the existance of two people in my household, but I don't want to give our names or tell them if we own or rent.    And  don't want to give my phone number.

What happens if you return a partial form?   Do they take away your birthday?

I thought the same thing about question two.  Like someone would make a mistake on question one and then quickly realize it on question two!!

Why don't you want to give your phone number?  You don't think the government could find out your phone number if they wanted to?

If you don't give them your names, how will they know whom they have counted?

Whether you own your house or not is public info.  If you own it, you'll have a title, or a mortgage.

That whole race thing comes up at my work. What we tell those we are working with is if you are hispanic from Mexico, you are considered Caucasian. as long as you mark that you are hispanic you are still part of that demographic. if someone is African American but was raised in a hispanic culture they can mark that down as well. In reality though, ethnicity is self reported. I am Irish and German but if I want to say i am Hispanic there is nothing illegal about that that I know of. In High School it was once explained to me that being hispanic is more culturally centered while race is considered a physical attribute hence why they have to ask the 2 different questions. (though i could be mis-remembering and completely wrong)

And if the government knows where I live, or is able to determine this info, why is the census addressed "To Resident At" and notifies me that my response is required by law?  What if I had moved between the time I received my letter from the census bureau that they would be sending me the census and the time my census was received at my address?

they need an accurate count of people in each state/locality to make sure they have the correct number of representatives in congress.  you don't NEED to fill out anything past the number of people in your home.  i'm not paranoid about the census, but i'm also not taking more than 30 seconds out of my day to do it.

To address the 8/9 confusion - Question 8 is regarding ethnicity (think culture).  Question 9 is regarding race (think genetics/skin color).

You can practically eliminate this through trust. Instead of title being in John Smith's name, it may be the Smith Trust, the John Trust, or whatever. That would then be on public record with the county recorder's office. Of course, you can look through the indexes but it would help minimize the public information on the top level.

I actually called the other day and spoke to a real person on question #9....  was told it's the "race" you "identify" with...  again I said my husband identifies as hispanic.  He doesn't identify as black, white or Indian etc....  So I wrote in hispanic under race.  Problem solved...

You think they wanna pay people to actually research all that? Way easier and cheaper to just mail it to you and tell you to do it.

I think its funny that ppl get paranoid over the census, but put their info out all over the inet via signups or facebook.  Have you ever Googled yourself?  I personally am more cautious of internet sign ups and contest giveaways b/c some will sell my info to other companies and I am at a greater risk of identity theft.  As a land and business owner, the govt already has my important info - the census just confirms it.

The census is part of the constitution, just like the right to bear arms in a well regulated militia and that citizens do not have to quarter British troops.  200 years ago, we didnt have computers or accurate records of births and deaths at a federal level.  And they needed to make sure that the population was in accordance with the number of representatives in that district.  At the time, seemed like a good idea and really the only way to have an accurate account of the population.

And to answer your question - partial forms will not be counted and you will be visited by census workers.

A funny look at the census, the paranoia and flip flop of Michelle Bachmann
Stephen Colbert on the Census

If you don't do the census, you revoke your right to complain about how much it costs. Over 2/3 of the cost of the census is hiring & paying workers to knock on the doors of those who don't mail the form in. So do it, don't do it, I don't care. Just don't complain about the gov't spending $17 billion on the census if you don't fill out the form & send it back, because you're contributing to the expense.

Up to $100 fine for incomplete form.

Up to $5000 fine for fraudulent form.

If you don't want to fill out the form, fine.    If you ever want to crab about any lack of services that you feel the government should have provided you..... think back to that empty form and STFU.   (not directed at OP, in general at the "I don't want to fill out this 'private' info" crowd.)

X4 or wherever we are right now.

I filled out and sent mine yesterday.  The one thing I found interesting is that once you have 7+ people in your house they don't care about their race or whether they are a permanent or part time resident.  I think they only asked her name and birthdate though I don't have the form in front of me right now I just remember they wanted less information once you got to #7.

During the last census, my husband and I only filled out the number of people in our household and left the rest of the form blank. We decided that the govt didn't need to know anything other than that in order to make "census based decision"

We received mutliple phone calls and 3 visits from census workers. Ended up we did not fill out the rest of the form and did not get fined.

We are discussing how to fill it out this year. The one benefit that we have now that we didn't have then is that we have a totally fenced yard with multiple dogs (including a pit bull mix) so very few people make it to the front door uninvited.
