I'm finally at the point where a 10 mile run just isn't enough.  I have a fuel belt and some 8oz hand held bottles, but now that summer is coming I know the 24oz in the fuel belt just won't sustain me for 20+ mile runs if I plan on doing another 20+ miler the next day as well.  I know I can do loops back to my car or house, but I really enjoy getting out and exploring new trails and areas of town.

So how do you guys deal with your long runs and your nutritional and hydration needs?  Backpack? camelbak? fuel belt? do you just carry enough for half the run and be sure to bring some money to stop by a gas station half way through and refill everything?  Do you live off the land... refilling from people's water hoses or park water fountains or something?  Do you do anything different if it's a trail run in the middle of no-where as opposed to a more urban or rec path kind of run?

For longer distance stuff like trail runs/power hikes in the woods, I've used those small fanny packs that hold a full size cycling bottle at about a 45 degree angle.  That holds around 20 ounces or so.  I've also carried a hand bottle but I'm not too keen on those.  For some reason I have not cared much for a camelbak, even though I still have one.  If I could find a fanny pack that would hold 2 cycling bottles and not bounce excessively while running, I'd be in heaven!  The one I have is fine for hiking but less than desireable when you pick up the pace to a run.

I'm interested to see what others use too.  FWIW, I tend to be a "camel" of sorts and probably get by on less water than most people.

Have you looked at CamelBak?  They make systems for running.

I use a belt that has a pouch for your Gels and stuff and a holder for a single bike size bottle. I put a bottle in that filled with gator aid and I carry another 24 oz bottle with water an I run out and back route that brings me back by neighborhood parks at both ends that have water fountains.  I refill with water at each park and use the Gel and Cliff Mini bars for fuel between.  I also have a Camel Bak rouge but I have not tried it out yet.

I mentioned camelbak, I actually have two of them.  One is a classic and the other is a military version called the transformer.  Both are great for hiking, skiing, snowshoeing, etc, but when running in the summer they make my back drenched in sweat.  Perhaps it's just something I need to HTFU about and deal with?

I saw one guy at the Moab 100 this weekend that had a belt with two water bottles at 45 degree angles in the back.  I should have asked him what brand that thing was because it looked pretty comfortable.

Check THIS LINK as it appears there are several models that sport twin bottles!

And there are SEVERAL HERE TOO as the one from REI looks promising!

Max

The dual bottle (see downloaded picture in max's post) waist belt is being closed out for a huge discount at REI for about $20.  The two bottles are worth about that much.  The updated model gets inferior reviews and costs nearly twice as much.

The pouch is really good sized and could carry a couple of clif bars, your car key and a handful of Gu's.

The trouble for me is that I wear a waist high on my waist, because I feel it would interfere with my stride if worn on my hips.  Worn high, the tops of the bottles rub me in the back along my bottom ribs.  For me, this would work for a short run (6 to 10 miles), but such a run wouldn't normally require 2 bottles.   I think it would be excellant for short desert hikes, or short hikes where you have to carry extra fluids for children or a dog.

Still for just $20, buy it and try it out.  You'll either love it, or return it.  I'm throwing mine in my gear box and will use it on occassion on hot summer days.

I think the key thing is to adapt.  What system you use (camelback, handhelds and waist belt, faucets etc) is dependent on where and when you run.  I've used all the systems at different times.

I've done 30-35 milers by planting water jugs at road crossings along my route as I drove to the trailhead.  I then refilled my hydration gear as I ran a loop that included the drop sites.  Later, on the drive home, I'd pick up the jugs (it isn't nice to litter!).  I did this on mountain, not city, runs.

Sunday, I went 25.3 miles carrying only one bottle in a waist belt.  I used the only available faucet about 7.5 miles in at a trail head parking lot, then a planted water bottle at about 21 miles.  I was out of fluids for 3 or 4 miles before the last refill site, but only because I didn't have time to plant fluid in a better locale.

Since it's a training run and you aren't pushing as hard, water supplemented by gels should normally do you.  In the olden days, before there were electrolyte drinks (or gels), we'd wander the mountains all day with just water.  However, If you are worried about running out of yor favorite electrolyte drink (normally not found in faucets and hoses Cry), you can always carry enough to remix with water.

Wow, thanks for the tip on the REI closeout!  I'm going to order one just because of the price and hopefully I won't have the fit issues.  It's got to be better than the floppy oversize fanny pack that I'm currently using.  I'll be at the Grand Canyon next week and am planning a rim-river run and back, around 16-18 miles, but there are enough opportunities for getting water on the run back out so I should be OK with one 20 oz. bottle.  Still, the REI pack is almost too cheap to pass up!

OK done!  $16.93 for the pack, plus $6 shipping.  Can't beat it, like you say, the bottles alone are nearly worth that!

Glad I seen this post.  I'm not a huge fan of REI but I am a memeber and do have a $17 dividend that I was wondering what I was going to do with.  Ordered the hydration pack (even though I own 4-5 other different kinds) and am having it shipped to the local store so I don't have to pay shipping.  Cost me .97 cents.

I usually carry a 3L, Camelback and pretty well carry everything with me. This weekend was 40 miles and I had 3L of fluid in my pack plus 1 more more 500mL bottle. Thank goodness I had the extra bottle because the 3L was gone with about 4 miles to go. I always carry enough food, clothes, GPS, maps, compass, etc. in case of emergency when out in no-mans-land. The run this weekend, I saw 2 people in 9 hours of running. Can't count on anyone out there for sure when off the beaten path.

Good luck - Happy Running !

I hate being weighed down so I only carry a 24oz bottle with me but plan  my runs around places I can stop and refill.  One of my training routes has a public water fountain and a coffee shop that doesn't mind when I swing through to fill up again (i stop in when I can to buy a cup of coffee).  On another, I bring a few dollars with me so I can refill with gatorade from a 7-11 on the road.
