Pre-race routine:

Arrived early, quick bike check, set up at transition, ate a harvest bar and water in Transition.
Event warmup:

Pre-swim stretches, visualise race. Quick swim to ensure goggle seal.
Swim
  • 42m 12s
  • 2000 meters
  • 02m 07s / 100 meters
Comments:

Had a really good swim, better sighting would have saved some time. Left arm sore half way through but kept on going using more right arm. Felt really good coming out of the water to a fast transition.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe try one of those fancy smancy tri wetsuits!
Transition 1
  • 02m 12s
Comments:

Having things laid out in logical order made a fast and smooth transition.
What would you do differently?:

Work on mounting bike and dressing while on bike.
Bike
  • 3h 26m 54s
  • 92 kms
  • 26.68 km/hr
Comments:

It was a good ride except for the back pain.
What would you do differently?:

Add water to gel flask as I only got 2 mouthfuls from it. More water cages on bike would make it a bit faster.
Transition 2
  • 01m 23s
Comments:

A good transition considering my back. Couldn't bend over to put on shoes, had to sit on ground.
What would you do differently?:

Look at some new stretches, more time on bike (with aero bars?)
Run
  • 2h 27m 35s
  • 20 kms
  • 07m 23s  min/km
Comments:

Probably my poorest section. It was tough with back pain for the first 30 minutes, really slowed me down. But after loosening up by the end of the first loop my feet were in a world of hurt. Not sure why, shoes? need insoles? orthotics? Still an okay time for a half marathon.
What would you do differently?:

This is the one area of training I started strong and let slide as I was really focusing on the ride.
Post race
Warm down:

Walk and stretching gatorade and food. Love powerbar protien plus drink.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Back spasm, foot pain.

Event comments:

A very professional and organised race. The bike has to be considered a very challanging route. Probably not a good race for a first timer or personal best because of the hills. But very enjoyable and where else can you get body marked by Lori Bowden and line up next to Tom Evans and Jasper Blake?

Then some good downs on W Saanich then up through brentwood bay a great down hill but then the monster climb. First loop good, second better, third worse as back was in severe pain. Couldn't wait to get off the bike. the last climb on Oldfield was a struggle.

Hey Jay,
Great race. It sure was hot out there. Was it 28 degrees? Whew that's the hottest day that we've had in awhile.

Your times are pretty solid throughout the race. Some of those triathletes are sure good runners, but I think most people would be happy with a 2.5 hour half marathon time, so we did good.

How are you feeling now? Hopefully the back pain didn't take to long to go away.

Jen
