Overcast
Total Time = 2h 33m 9s
Overall Rank = 49/184
Age Group = 50-54
Age Group Rank = 1/10
Pre-race routine:

Up at 4:30 am, had a banana, Hammer Gel (espresso for the caffeine) and drank water right up to race time.
Event warmup:

VERY short spin on bike and a walk to the bathrooms. That was it.
Swim
  • 36m 48s
  • 1650 yards
  • 02m 14s / 100 yards
Comments:

The swim took a lot of people out of the race mentally because it was so miscalculated. Most swimmers were 8-10 minutes slower than anticipated. The course was more like 2,200-2,300 yards, not 1,650, and it left you feeling like you had really screwed up the swim.
What would you do differently?:

Transition 1
  • 01m 9s
Comments:

Since the water was too warm for wetsuits, T1 went pretty quick. I swam without a shirt, but slipped one over my head for the bike as a sun shield.

Bike
  • 1h 10m 52s
  • 25 miles
  • 21.17 mile/hr
Comments:

Legs felt very heavy at the start of the bike. Found myself wondering if it was because I worked too hard in the preceeding days, or the long swim. I think it was the workouts this last week. Legs got to feeling normal around mile 5.
What would you do differently?:

Nada
Transition 2
  • 00m 41s
Run
  • 43m 41s
  • 6.25 miles
  • 06m 59s  min/mile
Comments:

I felt great on the run, as I normally do. Was thinking I would run a 6:50 pace. My 7:03 was just fine and I think I could have run a 6:50, but since this was my first Oly and first 10K, I ran for heart rate, not pace.
What would you do differently?:

Run a bit harder
Post race
Warm down:

Bananas, watermelon and a beer.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

This was a test race at the Oly distance, so instead of going as hard as I could, I paced by heart rate on the bike and run.

Event comments:

Several things need to be said here. First, the times are what I recall (except for my overall time) since the results have not been posted on the web yet. I know I was 49th overall, but total entrants and all times are subject to revision. Secondly, as I mentioned, the swim was way long. Finally, my first place finish was due to the fact that a guy who actually beat me by 1 minute got a 2-minute penalty for somethng, either an equipment penalty or a blocking penalty, I'm not sure which. So my 1st place finish is bitter-sweet. My attitude is that I wouldn't have been in position to take 1st if I hadn't been in 2nd. So whatever. I was really pleased with my performance in the race and in my first Oly. I needed to get an Oly under my belt before nationals in August, and that's what this race was for.

Swimming

Overall: 65/184
Performance: Good

Course: Triangle and very long. Probably 400-600 yards too long. The trouble is that the pace per 100 is calculated on a 1,650 yard course, so it looks terribly slow.

Fantastic race, as I've already told you a couple of times. It really was a mental blow coming out of the water and seeing the time ("Gee, I don't recall treading water for 10 minutes"), but you just shook it off. Looking forward to seeing your results from later in the season. It's going really well! Enjoy that family time and let your mind regroup.
