I am planning on doing this one again. I did the tri-it-on last year for my first triathlon. I plan on doing the Olympic length this year. It was a fun race last year. The biggest issue was the rough seas.

My training partner and I plan on doing this.  Not made up our mind as far as distance most likely the short due to the open water swim.

This was my first last year.  I did the Tri-it-on also.  It was a great race and I had a lot of fun.  Met a lot of people also.  The swim was a little rough that day.  I did another OWS three weeks later that was smooth as glass.  Depends on the day.

Overall, i would give this race very high marks.  It was well run and fun.

I'm not going to make it this year.

Hey folks,  I'm from Foley and just did my first Tri at the Mullet Man.  Had a good time and did not drown!  I'm doing the Grand Man for a final warmup to try to build up to this Olympic distance craziness.  I hope all summer is long enough to train up to this level.  The 10 k is gonna be slow, as I am not a zealous runner.

Question:  How far should I be swimming in the pool to train for a possibly rough OWS of this length (.9 miles) ?

Another question: Probably the wrong forum, my apologies, but what would be considered a good time for a 1 mile pool swim?

I'm an extremely slow runner.  I'm probably going to do Grandman also.  You should be fine by the end of summer training to OLY, as long as you stay consistant.

If your logs are accurate, looks like you have a pretty good swim pace already and looks like you have good distance in your swims.  I would just build on that.  I would think in the 2000m range would be good for an OLY.  To me, a good time is anything 2 min/100yd and under, especially holding that pace over an extended period.  Keep up the training and looks like you will be fine.

So where can we find what they are planning on doing to replace the Gulf Swim.  Is there any kind of official announcement?

Last announcement I recieved was an online poll they sent out via email that was asking people to vote on whether they would like to either:

a) make it a duathalon

b) be transported to lake shelby by shuttle.......do the swim there......mile or so run back to transition area.......then bike and run.

I voted for option B....but haven't heard the final results.

I ran into the girl that runs Team Magic at Peavine Falls and she said if they can't do the ocean then they would probably do a swim/run/bike/run.

Personally I do think they will end up with an ocean swim as what has hit the beaches there has been fairly light and (assuming the spill has now been permanently stopped) it will dissipate by the time Sept. rolls around.  2 months is more than enough time for tides, waves, sun, and microbes to get the oil out of the open water.

Wow that's the most optimistic assessment of the situation that I have seen.  I hope you are right my canoeing friend.  Most of the people down here my age (I'm 42) assume they will never see the Gulf the same in their lifetime.  It's pretty gross down there on some days.

Well, just don't assume that oil in the water lasts forever.  Huge amounts of oil seep naturally from the seafloor of the Gulf every year.  Microbes eat that stuff up and will eat the current spill up.  In fact, as long as the cap holds this storm coming in may well help break the oil up even further.

Here is the latest forecast.  That is way,way better than it was a week ago.   It should continue to get better over the next couple weeks until there really isn't much left out there.

They have updated the site to say that they will be going on with the race since the swimming advisory has been lifted. I will be there doing the Olympic length race? WHO'S GOING WITH ME????

I'm planning on it.  I was there this weekend - the water is superb down there.

Great race again this year!

You guys probably saw me on the side of the road.....I think I was the only person that got a flat this year. Sucks too because I would have easily won the Clydesdale division. I had the fastest swim and run and would have been on pace to finish around my goal time of 1 hour....but had to sit on the side of the road for 20 minutes with a flat.

Major props to the race organizers though....they even had a tech crew sent out to fix my tire for me. It took a while for them to get there...but at least I got to finish the race!

Oh that was hot.  How can it take 1:10 to run 10k.  Ouch.  What a waste of a good swim and bike effort.  I just fell apart in the heat and humidity.  Next year I'm waiting to see the forecast before signing up.  Otherwise a very well run and fun race with a good awards ceremony.  Wish I had won a Quintana bike, but they went to some nice folks anyway.

Team Magic puts on a nice race..I'm pleased with my results had a good swim and bike leg but suffered during the 10k run...The heat definitely looked like it took a toll on a lot of us..From mile 4 in was brutal...Almost a top three will just keep working at it...The Hangout was a cool place to mingle after wards..Good Luck to all the rest of the season...

I figure the heat index on the road there for the run was 120+.  Kudos to the folks who can handle that heat.  I can't.  That run was a truly awful experience.  Started as the 30th starter.  Out of the water 3rd.  Off of the bike 5th.  Then the conga line passed me.  A possible 2:25 (yes, I suck at running even on the best of days) turned into a 2:38 darn quick.

You guys may have seen me - I was the guy sitting down inside the Hangout with 8 bags of ice on me trying to avoid heat exhaustion.  Luckily no ill effects - had a decent run today.

Overall, though, the race was well done.  The exception being some of the traffic controls.  One officer sent me off on the wrong road on the way back before realizing his mistake and calling me back.  The road crossing leading into transition was horribly patroled.  There was one guy hit by a car (not a competitor, but he was riding along with the bike traffic) and one very near hit as the police there weren't doing a good job of controlling traffic flow.
