I am icthing to start open water training.  I don't swim with a wetsuit, so the temp probably need to be at or above 70 degrees.

Does anyone know the current water temp of Lake P-ville?  Has anyone begun OWS in Lake P-ville yet?

Thanks in advance,

Hook'em

I did a Google search and found a website that says the water is 68 today (4/27).

I was out there yesterday and it was pretty cold.  I didn't bring a thermometer but know that I would not have gotten in w/out a wetsuit to swim any substantial distance.

Thanks for the information.

I am doing a new 10K in Austin this Saturday, but I will probably hit the lake next weekend.

Went swimming there last weekend and was happy to have a wetsuit, but I am a cold wimp. Also, fyi; I am swim course director for Lake Pflugerville Triathlon - and we're scheduled to put up the buoys next Saturday for the 500m swim course (as well as one to mark off 1000m).

So glad to hear the buoys are going up!  That's the one thing I don't like about open water swims - not really knowing how far you go.  It will also be nice to have the 1000m buoy.  I'll be swimming out there a lot this summer getting ready for IMFL.

Thanks for the information and I too am glad the buoys are going out.  I guess they will be on the opposite side of the lake this year, though.

Yes, the starting point will be on the opposite side, where the beach is.

Down to the last 100 or so slots for the race, btw... in case some of you are thinking about signing up.

JD -

Can you explain how the bouys are arranged?  (Same start and finish point? triangle? square? out and back?)

My wife and I are planning on swimming Saturday morning.  She'll do 750 and I'll probably do 1000.

Thanks in advance,

Doug

Sure, no problem. The swim is 500m and starts on the right hand side of the beach area. There are two yellow buoys that you will keep on your left, and then you angle in a little bit to go around the turnaround point; which is a blue buoy. There are two more yellow buoys as you head back; again keeping them to your left. Exit will be on the opposite side of the beach from the start (left side if facing water).

For the 1000 swim, there is also a red buoy about 250 meters further out in the lake from the blue one. That won't be used for the race, but gives you a nice 1000m training swim if you swim out and back.

Good luck and stay safe...

JD

PS: If anybody notices any of the buoys damaged or missing, let me know. Have a problem once in a while with vandals; hopefully that doesn't happen this year.

I think it is up to about 70 right now.  With all of the 90 degree days, water temp should not be much of a problem going forward.

Robin is going to give us an up-to-date report after her swim in the morning.Wink

I'll be there Friday around lunch.  My nephew and I are going to swim a few repeats on the 1K loop.  Anyone is welcome to join and swim whatever distance you choose but we will be there.

Any takers?

So, George - did you end up swimming today?  I know the rain started around the lunch hour.

Since it appears as if there is a substantial break in the rain, I will probably still go out there in a little while.

One other swim distance note for those of you swimming out there... we measured the distance all the way across the lake (from the beach to the little dock on the other side), and it was just a shade under 1/2 mile one way (.47 mile to be exact).

Just be safe and have at least one swim buddy Cool

Hope to see some of you out there.  Will be trying to do at least one OWS per week - either Monday or Thursday.
