If it meant the difference between my wife having to work and having somebody else care for my children, or having my wife stay home and raise our children, I'd do whatever it takes to make the latter happen.

From all the information you posted, the new opportunity looks amazing.  Good luck!

I'll chime in with everyone else and say seriously take a look at this offer.  I work for a small company and turned down another offer based on what is now empty promises.  I know he might be your friend but you have to do what is best for your family not his.

Heck, I would even say that your friend and boss would be happy for you if you take the new job and enjoy it. Some companies can only pay so much but they don't hold you hostage.

Thanks you all for telling me what I already knew but needed to hear.

I just got off the phone with the National Sales Manager after another lengthy conversation.

I'm going to meet with him and the rest of the management team when my family goes back to New Jersey for vacation in early June. We weren't going to be able to meet until the week after my vacation anyway. Conflicting travel schedules are always fun and he appreciated that I wasn't willing to cancel the commitments I've made for my current employer. It is just a coincidence that my Grand Parent's shore house is only about an hour from their offices. It will be nice to meet the entire company before deciding as opposed to just meeting the Sales manager.

Another strange coincidence is that I live in Wisconsin but my current employer and the prospective employer are just 20 minutes from each other in New Jersey.

What a stress filled month and a half. We just got home from vacation. While back in NJ/PA I met with the prospective employer.

The short version of the story: I interviewed in person, got a job offer and accepted it. I told my friend that I was leaving and he was bummed, but understood. I asked if he wanted me to fulfill the travel plans I made for them (to train new reps) and he said he would get back to me. Apparently his dad (the president) did not take it as well because I never heard back from my friend, but I started getting calls the next day from my sales reps asking why they just got an email saying I was no longer with the company. Seems pretty short sighted of my boss to act that way when I was willing to diligently tie up loose ends and make sure everything got transitioned properly so no sales were lost. I'm not going to feel guilty about not doing any of that since they stopped the auto deposit on my pay check for the week prior to leaving for vacation.

The new jobs starts mid-July and I am totally stoked.

In the mean time the bike shop is going to give me hours so we have some income during this period of no work.

With that much time before new role began, you would think they would have been more thankful for your commitemtn to stay on board.   That said, it is normal policy in many industries to let someone go once they are going to competitor.   Curious as to why you didn't wait a bit longer to let them know, say 2-3 weeks out which would have still let you close loose ends if they kept you on-board.   If not, you would have had less time between roles.  Although looks like it worked out with more family time and hours in shop.

It's not a competitor. Totally different industries. I wanted to give my friend as much notice as possible.

Giving that much notice was the right thing to do - it was wrong of them to drop you immediately...

I think they just proved why you made the right decision.  Was reading over your previous posts and noticed the no car allowance or fuel for company use and thought to myself "They are just taking advantage of their employee"; I know you can claim it on your taxes and what not, but coupled with the other "pay structures" you gave hint to, there seems to be a certain manipulation of the Employer - employee contract there.  You seem to be moving to a much more solid and fair company.  Glad to hear your friend understood.  Good friend.  And congrats!

Subject: RE: Job dilemma, WWCOJD? Update
I'm finally getting rolling with the new job. I think I am in my 4th week now. It's going well, but has totally killed my BT time (including workout logging, I'm still training for IMWI, just not logging very well, if at all).

Thanks for all the support folks!
