Pre-race routine:

Got up at 4:30, got ready and headed to race. Was about 30 minutes from the hotel to the race grounds - 20 min drive and 10 mins to walk in. Ate a PB&H sandwich, 12oz OJ and a banana at 5 AM. Got checked in and marked and set up transition. Rechecked bike since I checked in the night before and had to put it together in the dark.
Event warmup:

Nervous!!! Heart beating and adrenaline going. Spent 15 minutes stretchng and ran an easy 1/2 mile to warm up.
Swim
  • 11m 38s
  • 547 yards
  • 02m 08s / 100 yards
Comments:

Brown water with no visibility. After horn sounded, held back to let people get out in front. Still ended up getting stuck in groups and going to side stroke three times to look for open lanes. Ran up onto several people which totally hosed up my rhythm and breathing. Got congested and ran into people around the first buoy. Good for first OWS!
What would you do differently?:

Started back and wide but took a vector on the corner buoys which threw me into groups. Would go wider overall to stay out of traffic and away from the sidestroke.
Transition 1
  • 02m 20s
Comments:

Organized everything in order wanted to put them on. One tough point is getting shoes on. Old mountain biking shoes that don't go on quick. About 100 m from swim step out to racked bike. Ran to bike but didn't run out with bike.
What would you do differently?:

Organized well. Different shoes would go on more quickly. Would run to mount line with bike.
Bike
  • 46m 38s
  • 15 miles
  • 19.30 mile/hr
Comments:

Course was level to slightly rolling. Great race after training on hills! Lots of turns. Some pretty tight. asphalt and concrete changing surface but overall good and fast! Was concerned that my HR was about 13 bpm higher than I wanted. Thought it was nerves initially but didn't come down after first couple of miles. Felt strong so went with it but watched for any fatigue. Passed a lot of people as well as got passed!
What would you do differently?:

Very happy with ride. May have pushed it a little more. Finished feeling strong. Would probably slow down closer to dismount line instead of further out. Slowed myself down some because of how high my HR was so would push it more maybe. Road bike would speed me up.
Transition 2
  • 02m 9s
Comments:

Long distance from dismount line to bike rack location. Volunteers slowed us down before dismount line. Walked bike in to rack location. Others around me were walking their bikes in as well. Gear changeout went well. Shoes went on quick.
What would you do differently?:

Come up to dismount like faster and stop more quickly. Run with bike to rack location.
Run
  • 26m 36s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 08m 33s  min/mile
Comments:

Run started good at 8:22 pace. Grabbed an Accelerade from a person on accident instead of water and made me bonk for a good 5-10 minutes. Slowly got pace back
What would you do differently?:

Only drink WATER!
Post race
Warm down:

walked for about 5 minutes and hydrated.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Experience.

Put on Garmin after swim. HR was 172! Nerves and difficulty with running into other swimmers had it up I guess. Pace was higher than I anticipated and my average HR was 161 and was targeting 148 but overall felt good so went with the pace.
