cjarch - 2010-05-05 10:46 PM I'll be participating in the Sprint, and it will finally be my first Tri ever...  so I'm shooting for ... finish.  Just look for the big guy at the at the back of the pack and fumbling through transitions and that will be me. ;}

My wife and I will be heading down late Thursday night at staying at the Oceanside Inn.

Sounds like we are arriving at the same time, same hotel, for the same event.  Looking forward to meeting you on the island.

For the Turtle Crawl veterans - is the transition area in a paved parking lot or on grass?  As you exit the water did they have shallow pools, water hoses or anything to wash sand off your feet?  Thanks!

Transition is in the paved parking lot next to a wooden deck just off the sand , I don't remember any water hoses but there maybe something like that around the wooden decking. I didn't worry about sandy feet and just went sockless for the bike shoes.

It would not do any good to have a water pool at the edge of the water.  You would just get sand on your feet again when you stepped out.

As Rockrunner said, the parking lot is paved after the wooden deck overlooking the beach.  There is a shower on the deck that will be on.  They also have a plastic kids water pool on the deck you can step in.

I always have a small hand towel to wipe my feet off in transtition.  You may want to try that.

Just as a note.... we did a ocean swim last thursday the 6th and the current was running a towards the north which is unusual.  So I hope the course goes down curren as that was a bear of a swim we did into the current.. The swim was on St Simons island but I'm sure Jeykl's current runs the same way.

I picked up my packet yesterday. #578 it is.  Also tinkered around some with my new Garmin 310 to figure out the Multisport modes.. cool little device.  I'm getting my mental game on for Saturday.  This is going to be a fun challenge.

Leaving for Jekyll Island after work today.  Looking forward to the event.

The Oly starts 15 mins prior to the Sprint.  Do the Olys just start further down the beach and we end up at the same point coming out of the water with the Sprint?  In transition, are the Oly and Sprint all mixed in or do they have different racks for the two events?

Thanks and see you on the beach!

Last year, the Oly start was further south on the beach.  The oly and sprint both exit the water at the same point, but the RD didn't start the sprint until all oly athletes hit the beach.  Most of the Oly athletes were long gone when the sprint athletes arrived in T1.  Both are in the same transition area, but I think I remember all the sprint racks positioned separate from the oly racks.

Good luck!  I can't wait.  I won't be able to go down until Friday evening, so I'm jealous of all you folks leaving early..ha

I did the sprint last year and they waited until the last Olympic distance swimmer passed where our start was on the beach and then they started our time trial start.  You end up with a pretty even stream of swimmers and a relatively chaos free transition.  I picked up my race number, #19 (not sure what I put as my swim time but I know I at least put some thought into it).  I can't wait to leave in the morning!

How many are in this race, sprint and oly?  If you are #19 do they have the numbers broke out for the Olys from 1-400 and then the Sprint is 401 and up?  I can't remember how many people this event allows.

I don't recall but I'm pretty sure they leave a gap in there in case people register on Friday.  I think I was 5XX last year when I did the sprint.

Hello from jekyll island. Stuck my feet in the water and its VERY warm. Does not look good for a wetsuit swim if you ask me.
Bike course looks cool (fast). run flat and along the beach most of the way.
Got a nice room @ the oceanside Inn and suites, jacuzzi in room!! that will feel good on sunday night!
Off for a nice seafood dinner shortly.
See you all around the pool tomorrow.

Late jet off here from Atlanta.. on our way down now to get there very late... or early.. depending on how you look at it.

I talked with the RD when picking up the packet and he told me that the swim starts would be the way crazyalaskin said.. oly's go first.. then he strolls down the beach to the sprint start and once all the oly's have past the sprint start in the water her would start us.

Looks like it will be a fun time this weekend.

Heads up everyone, the bike is 14.4 EACH loop, 28.8mi for the Oly. Drove it this morning/map my runed it, and talked to jim (RD) about it.
Also, a small part of the run is going to cross and go along the road for about 1/3mi, then back on the path along the beach due to construction.
Still looks like a FAST course.
See you all at the Pasta dinner tonight!

OK, was that swim NUTS or was it just me? Times were more then twice what they were last year and the wind on the bike was just a killer on the legs.
Was able to still hold on for 4th AG and 26th overall...one tried puppy.
Off to see the turtles released!!

It wasn't just you. I was looking forward to a fast swim. Instead it took me over twice as long as I expected. Wind on the bike was murder as well.

One of my friends (who took 3rd overall female!) said her swim time was twice as long as what it was last year - she did the olympic last year as well - and she is a stronger swimmer this year!

I forgot to start my watch, but those buoys were crawling by. Also, the bike was much tougher. I'm used to riding into wind, but those last 3 or 4 miles of each loop were brutal. I probably shouldn't have started out the first 8 miles doing 24-26 mph though . The heat didn't bother me too much on the run but my legs were dead from the bike.

To anyone who decided to do this race because of a quick swim, the race was absolutely nothing like it was last year. I still like it though. Nice and scenic, and flat and (potentially) fast.

Also interesting (and I don't blame the RD or timing company, i know how hard timing is), my chip beeped every time i stepped on the mats, but the computer never picked it up. In order to get my time, I had to go talk to the timing company and they looked through all their paper printouts (the little ticker sheet backups with just numbers and time of day) in order to get me my time! But while The Cube still beat me overall (I still made it on the 1st page of the printouts!), I ended up 3rd in my AG, which I was pretty excited about since my last (and first) oly was not so good.

Cube, great job out there!

Yes, that swim was nuts! When I "thought" I should be coming up on the yellow triangle bouy to turn to the finish, I saw the GREEN triangle letting me know I was only half way done. Talk about a kick in the nutz.

Congrats on the AG podium!

I finished 19th, which was good enough for 7th in my AG (30-34).
