Sunny
Total Time = 1h 14m 51s
Overall Rank = 30/165
Age Group = F20-24
Age Group Rank = 1/6
Pre-race routine:

Had breakfast early, 1/2 a bagel with cream cheese and a banana. Drove to the race, checked in and set up transition before reviewing the course
Event warmup:

Put the wetsuit on and got in the water to get used to the cold. Walked around a bit and talked to some fellow competitors
Swim
  • 10m 7s
  • 750 meters
  • 01m 21s / 100 meters
Comments:

This was my first OWS, so I drafted off someone else to the first buoy and I should have passed them earlier. The water was incredibly cold, but not as bad as I thought it would be. My face was so cold the whole time.
What would you do differently?:

Pass the person I was drafting off earlier. Otherwise, nothing, except ask them to heat the lake :)
Transition 1
  • 01m 20s
Comments:

My hands were so cold that I could not feel my zipper pull on my wetsuit or where the edge of my cap was on my head. It also made putting my shoes on so difficult, as well as trying to buckle my helmet. Brr...
What would you do differently?:

Not swim :) I don't think I would have done anything differently
Bike
  • 38m 10s
  • 12.7 miles
  • 19.97 mile/hr
Comments:

Overall a good bike ride for me. I kept a fast pace the whole time and was pretty pleased with this time on this course for just using a road bike.
What would you do differently?:

Practice more in aero so I could use the aerobars in a race.
Transition 2
  • 01m 18s
Comments:

Heading into transition everything was going well. As soon as I was off the bike I realized my toes were still completely numb from the swim. So, I had a ridiculously hard time getting my shoes on and lost a lot of time here.
What would you do differently?:

I don't know... wear socks during the bike to warm up my toes.
Run
  • 23m 58s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 07m 43s  min/mile
Comments:

Other than getting my shoes one, this was a great race for me. A PR for 5k run actually. I just kept reminding myself to push as hard as I could the whole time and only slowed up once after climbing a tiny hill when I felt a bit light headed.
What would you do differently?:

Take water on the course maybe, there were no aid stations on the run. It was a good run, so no changes needed here.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around and talked to my family. Grabbed a slice of pizza, a protein shake and a banana. Stretched out a bit watching the Elites go off.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Being so cold after the swim. My hands weren't functioning and I couldn't feel my toes until after I was done with the race.

Event comments:

I thoroughly enjoyed this race, despite the miserably cold water and I'll do it again. It would have been nice to have a water station on the run. A great race and a wonderful day for one too!

Awesome job! You did beyond Excellent!

As for the cold toes... if you know it will be cold beforehand, you can tape up some of the holes in your tri/cycling shoes. Some shoes (especially tri specifics) are def. warm weather only.

Keep up the good work!
