Overall Rank = 87/364
Age Group = 50-54
Age Group Rank = 4/23
Pre-race routine:

Check in to hotel and head over for packet pickup. Rainy yucky afternoon. Get packet, check out transition, drive bike course. Dinner at aa diner, watch some tv, lights out by 9:00.

Up at 4:30, shower, Dunkin Donuts for Joe, the usual breakfast (PB, banana, honey on English Muffin), drop of the kids, stretch, double check gear, pack car and head to race site by 6:00
Event warmup:

Got to race sire about 6:20. Got transition set up, walked around a bit, pee a couple times, stretch Achilles, head to swim start for warm up
Swim
  • 25m 42s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 34s / 100 yards
Comments:

Swim felt really good. Stayed smooth and steady. Passed a bunch from my wave and several from the wave ahead. Got passed by a couple fast ladies from the wave behind me. The chop was heavy after the turn around but I managed to find a good rhythm with breathing.

Had to stop 2x to sight due to chop and being surrounded by yellow caps so I couldn't see the yellow turn buoy.
What would you do differently?:

Swim faster. Same answer as always.
Transition 1
  • 02m 29s
Comments:

Took a bit to get out of wetsuit, then I took time to put on a long sleeve jersey due to rain and cold. Took off Timex, put on Garmin.

Long run up a grassy hill to mount line, but that was after the timing mat so it went on the bike time
What would you do differently?:

Faster out of wetsuit and not put on jersey. Maybe not wear two timing devices.
Bike
  • 1h 21m 59s
  • 24 miles
  • 17.56 mile/hr
Comments:

Very hilly, technical, and wet. Used Granny gear 2x. Stayed in aero pretty well on hills. Some parts of the road were rough and pitted. Some hills and turns snuck up on me but I handled them pretty well. One stretch I went from 36 to 6 miles an hour in very short order. I ate one gel and drink about 1/2 ech water and Gatorade. Seemed like I was either grinding up a hill or flying down one with not a lot of good time to take hands off the bars.
What would you do differently?:

Ride faster, stay in aero more on hills. I did manage to stay down on them around 35 mph
Transition 2
  • 01m 59s
Comments:

Had to get sleeve out from under Garmin strap and take off jersey. Sat to put on shoes. Feet were wet and grass covered. Forgot race number but only got a few racks down before I realized.
What would you do differently?:

Not wear long sleeve jersey. Put number on right away.
Run
  • 47m 57s
  • 6.2 miles
  • 07m 44s  min/mile
Comments:

Started out well with a 7:49, dropped to 7:45, but slowed some as the race went on. Finished strong up the hill at the end. I am not really a fan of off road running. Too much looking down and dodging stuff.
What would you do differently?:

push the pace in the middle sections. Hydrate a bit more
Post race
Warm down:

Eat, ice some (not enough) stretch some (not enough) Walk back to transition the walk back to car

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Genetics?

Event comments:

CGI puts on great races!

Thanks, and you didn't do so bad yourself...just one spot off the podium, next time!

haha, and yeah, I braked on all the ones I needed to, just also did a little on some I didn't.  Really didn't matter though, I like not crashing a lot.
