How do you check your firmware version?

Technology is not my forte...obviously

Go into "Settings"  then "About Forerunner" and it will tell you the version.

Mine says Beta 2.9

You're good to go.

Make sure you swim at least 10k on your test so we can properly assess accuracy.Tongue out

I just did my first OWS with my 310 on Tuesday, using software version 2.7.  I had it under my swim cap and did not have the additional swim functions of ver 2.9.  My graphic of the course was exactly correct with no stray points AND I had heart rate data for the entire swim.  Based on that, I'll keep using it under the swim cap.

I just tested mine out at the beach. I sawm betweem 2 signs and than walked back. Swim registered .63 and walk registered .60. I think this was retty accurate because the waves were oushing me off a little bit and I had to get back on course a couple times. This is awesome because now I can do my long swims at the beach on the weekends with my family.

KathyG - 2010-05-28 10:14 AM From my swim this morning Garmin says I swam 3.78 miles in 45 minutes...ah not right.

I'm not sure I did all the steps right.

I downloaded the update and I could see it transferring to my 310XT.

Questions?

So when you select other, is there supposed to be another drop down menu you select swim? There wasn't on mine. Or did I misread/understand that?

The adjustment to make distance accurate is that after you hit lap button and will show up on the 310XT as the corrected amount?

Check and ensure your firmware says '2.90'.

Once done, hold the mode button down and go into 'Other' mode.  Then in the settings go to 'Swim' and set to enabled to 'Yes'.

During the swim a distance will not be shown (if a distance is shown, then something is incorrect).  Once lap/stop is pressed the distance will be calculated.
Or maybe all that swimming is really paying off Kathy.  Imagine how that workout would look in your logs!

Did an OWS

Measured actual distance with 310xt in canoe : 560m to go, 562m back.

Measured with 310xt swimming : 588m to go, 590m back.

Not bad

The line in Garmin Connect is still way off.

Swim :

Yeah, the line won't change any - that's a known.

First data set from this morning on an openwater swim race here in the DC area. Today was a 'training run' day, tomorrow is the actual race.

1-Mile Swim (measured by race officials twice as 1.0 Miles by GPS):

FR305 in Swim Cap (Baseline): Measured as .98 Miles
http://connect.garmin.com/activity/34972859

FR310XT on right wrist with new firmware: 1.12 Miles
http://connect.garmin.com/activity/34970750

FR310XT on left wrist with old firmware: 2.47 Miles
http://connect.garmin.com/activity/34970949

Obviously, as expected the maps themselves on the 310XT with or without the firmware are dorked up - but the data using the new swim mode is MUCH closer to the baseline swim-cap (and actual distance). The swim cap had it at .98 miles (for 1.0 mile course), or within the margin of error for GPS. The new firmware pegged it at 1.12 miles, a touch bit long, but much better than the 2.47 miles the old firmware put it at.

More details later...

Dc, next time you talk to their tech guys, I have another upgrade suggestion.  Wouldn't it be great to have an optimal versus actual distance measurement?

For example, let's say you have a 2 buoy swim.  Out to buoy one, turn left to buoy 2, turn left to finish.  At each buoy you hit a button that signifies a way point.  At the end, you get a calculation for straight line distance as well as the distance you actually swam.  Then we could get a feeling for how effective our sighting skills are.  Make sense?

I must really be doing something wrong....I downloaded the upgrade, turned swim to on and went for OWS.  No distance registered and when I got back home and downloaded it it said I had swam 791.24 MILES at a speed of 93.6 MPH!!!!!!
Help, anyone? I mean, I know I'm good, but......(lol)

Could it be it was running when you were driving home ?

I would love to see the map of that one.

Maybe the wetsuit helped you by 92MPH.

Don't think it was running when I was driving home, but I don't think I was going 90+mph in my car either, the speed limit is more like 45.....

Anyone else having trouble upgrading software from 2.6 to 2.9? My ant agent works to upload workout data to garmin connect, but wont send the software to my device. It has the correct device listed when I download the software but wont transfer despite my resetting and sending data repeatedly. Frustrating...I really want to see my swims.

I was thinking maybe it was applying it's algorithm to the data points with the drive and got completely lost.

What does the map look like ?

I had the same issue. The fix was to add the Garmin download site to my trusted sites list in Internet Explorer.

When on the page you want to add to the trusted list:

Tools --> Internet Options --> Security --> Trusted Sites --> Sites

Might be different depending on your version of IE or if you use a different browser.

I have worn my 305 under my swim cap many times in OW and have never had a problem with it measuring distance (at least consistantly.  The only issue I have ever had is not actually  hitting the start button because it is under my cap and I can't see it.

Being able to wear on my wrist with the 310xt would be cool but I would still be afraid to lose it.

This may have just sold me on it, I have been on the fence but if it seems to work for everyone I will be getting one next week.

The map looks correct, not too crazy.

Is there a reason not to put the 310 under the swim cap? I'm personally too afraid of loosing the 310 while swimming if its on my wrist, and it doesn't fit under my wetsuit. I'm always wearing a swim cap, so why not just keep it there?

My 15min 31sec open water swim of 800yd this morning was logged as 1.31mi. The jitter was pretty extreme - probably as bad as what I've seen published on using the 310XT before the new feature was implemented in v2.90.

I had good satellite accuracy (+/-21ft), confirmed firmware v2.90 is diplayed in About Forerunner and have Mode, Other, Settings, Other Settings, Swim, Eanbled=YES.

Unless I did it wrong...

After 2.5 hrs of working on getting the update last night, I finally found the correct series of work around to get it loaded.  I had to be on the page for the update, then add buy.garmin.com to the trusted sites list (or I couldn't get there if I added it earlier).  Then when it asked if I wanted to display all content, I had to choose NO to actually get the download link to work.  Then I had to download it 4 times before it loaded in the ANT agent.  But it works now.

Did my bike ride today with version 2.9 and I HATE the GPS speed input.  I loved having the GSC-10 display my speed because it was smooth and reacted fasted to actual changes.  Does anyone know of a work around to get teh speed back from the Speed/Cadence sensor instead of GPS?

I did a whole bunch of testing this weekend using the new software in openwater swimming.

In short, the results were mixed.  While the swimcap method had accuracy withi .01-.02 miles (per mile), the closest I got the new wrist method to was .12 per mile (and sometimes out to .26 per mile).

I documented all of the findings in the post below.

In addition, I had a chance to 'sit down' with the Garmin Engineers responsible for the firmware update and discuss it in depth, and I included that as well in the post.

Great post.  Thank you !!!

I'm anxious for your write up on how they solved the power/rolling average weakness :-)

So, in the meantime while Garmin works on tuning their OWS function, I'm thinking of ways to secure my 310XT head unit to a swim cap.

I'm thinking I can take the mount segment from the v1 quick-release wristband and anchor it to a cap with snap-rivets, then use a 2nd cap over.
