Hello All,

I am signed up for the Boulder Tri Series and want to ride each of the courses at least once before the race. I have never raced in Boulder and am not familiar with the courses. Are there certain times of day or day of week that are better in terms of traffic? Are the shoulders on the roads? Any insite is very much appreciated.

Thanks!

The courses for all three are fairly similar, with the Peak course a bigger version of the sprint (along with the big climb on Old Stage Road), and the 70.3 course a bigger version of the Peak course (but without the big climb).

All three courses spend some time on Hwy 36, which always has lots of traffic.  The road has a decent shoulder, and there are almost always lots of cyclists out on the road.

All three courses go east from Hwy 36, then south to the Diagonal Hwy.  This portion of all 3 courses are basically country roads without too much traffic.  No shoulder to speak of, but you don't really need one.

All three courses continue southwest on the Diagonal Hwy back towards the Boulder Res.  The Diagonal has a fair amount of traffic, but a nice wide shoulder.

I don't know that any days or times are particularly good or bad.  All 3 courses are very popular routes for cyclists and there will be tons of cyclists out on the courses on the weekends, but also a fair amount out during the week.

x2 on what he said above! If you're going to ride the Boulder Peak course, be aware of the big hill on Old Stage road...it's a doozy! When are you going to ride the 70.3 course? I'd like to ride it too and would love to ride it with someone! Let me know if you would be up for it some weekend.

X2 on Aimee's comment about the Old Stage hill, steep up and down.
Likewise I'm wanting to ride the Peak and Long courses, at least, before the races...
If we can coordinate a weekend ride time(s), maybe we can carpool up Kathleen.

I could be in for riding the Peak and Long Course routes, too. I've done the Peak the past two years, but I always like to remind myself that I really *can* ride Olde Stage before the actual race. :p I've never done the Long Course, so I really wouldn't mind doing that one, just to see how I can expect to feel coming off the bike. Disclaimer: I'm slower than dirt and probably can't keep up with most of you...

Thanks for the info Moneyman.

How does the 12th or 13th look for people?
It would be great to ride the courses together. I have Steve and Aimee's e-mail and am happy to send a group e-mail out so we can figure out times/dates. Trimama530 if you want to PM me with your e-mail or times that would work for you that would be great.

Bummer...we're actually going camping (weather permitting) the weekend of the 12th and 13th.

We have our son's 5th b-day party on the 19th, Father's Day the 20th, then I'm doing the SheRox tri. on the 27th. So, it looks like I probably won't be able to get up there until July.

Let me know if anyone wants to meet up in July!

July works also!
I just want to make sure I do the Boulder Peak course before the actual race.
We have a bit more time for the long course route.
I will probably head to Boulder sometime on the 11th or 12th as I want to ride the sprint course before the race. If anyone is interested, let me know. we could tackle the sprint and peak course or a bit of both..

I would love to join you on the 12th or 13th not sure if I could do Friday the 11th> I would be up for any of the rides although I've never done Old Stage Hill and I am somewhat intimidated by it, but I want to try it. I've done the Sprint course but not the others however much of the rides appears to be the same. As trimama said I too am "slower then dirt". I've not ridden much in a group but also would not expect anyone to wait on me. I hate the idea of holding someone up. I would also like to maybe do a little swimming after. I've yet to do any open water swims this year and will need to get some in soon as I'm also doing the SheRox tri at the end of the month. I'll send you an email Kathleen.

I'm up for either the 12th or 13th for the Peaks course.  I refer the 13th, but if the 12th works better for others I'll skip my normal running group on Saturdays.

Also, there is an enforced 35mph speed limit on the decent during the race.
From the 2009 Race web site:
"Now, in its third year, a 35mph speed limit will be strictly enforced on the major descent on the backside of Old Stage Road. We will have police officers and course marshals monitoring this."

I assume this will still be in effect.

We're likewise camping the weekend of the 12th & 13th; for the balance of June &  July kids swim meets are Saturdays, which makes Sundays best for long rides in my case.  Just sayin'

Hi!
I'm a good friend of trimama's, and was just talking with her this morning about riding Old Stage prior to the Peak. This is my first Peak - I haven't been able to do it for one reason or another for the past few years, but am so excited, and a tad nervous... especially about Old Stage! I would LOVE to plan on riding the Peak course on June 13th if that works for people. Would be nice to get it out of the way so I will know I can do it without walking... or have an opportunity to try again if I have to walk!!

Hope to train with you all and/or see you at Peak! I see that quite a few of you are in Highlands Ranch - would love to get out on the trails locally with you too!! This is my 3rd year doing tri's, but I am not fast by any stretch. I've done all sprint tri's so far, with the exception of Rattlesnake Oly in '08, which was cancelled halfway through due to lightning/nasty weather, so I've kind of done a half Olympic. Peak will be my first Oly!! I'm also doing the Highlands Ranch Sprint tri this Saturday - anyone else?

Hi Amy,
It would be great to have you join us. A few of us are going to ride the course on the weekend of the 12/13th.  My understanding is that the 13th works for those who said they could ride.
There is a chance that I might go up both days but that is up in the air at this point. If you want to send me a private message (it is on the top left hand side of the page that says "messages")
and give me your e-mail address then I can include you in the group e-mail that is forming about the ride (s) that weekend. We are also thinking about doing a swim or brick while we are there.

I can do weekend rides the 5th (PM) and 6th, the 19th (if anyone wants to work something around packet pickup), and the 26th (PM) & 27th.

I'm up for a ride on the 13th!  I'm going to a wedding on the 12th, so I'll be a gametime decision, but count me in at this point.

Ooh, me too! I *may* possibly have plans on Sunday, although if we go early enough I might be able to do both (but like Amy said in the email, not TOO early!).

I'm actually going to be up in Boulder on Friday afternoon for a bike fitting at the Sports Garage and was pondering going out for a ride when I'm done (probably 4:30ish), if anyone was interested in joining...

If anyone is going to be up in Boulder on Friday morning, I'll be doing a little OWS followed by a ride of the Sprint course.
Not sure what time.....going to Carrie Underwood concert tomorrow night....so we'll see when I feel like crawling out of bed Friday morning. BUT, it will definitely be before noon

I live in Boulder and I would love to ride the 70.3 course sometime.  Just about any weekend day would work for me.

I'm not doing the Boulder series this year but I just wanted to chime in with how much you're going to love that long downhill when you turn off Hwy 36 onto St Vrain Road on the 70.3 course.  You earn it but it is so freakin' fun.
