Does anyone have any experience with this race?  I'm competing in my first triathlon here and was looking for any pointers.

Thanks

Pretty general question.   What kind of pointers?

Understood.  Is the water temp cold enough to warrant a full wetsuit?  Does everyone start at once from the beach or is it a wave start?  Are the participants more professional or amateur?  Is the beach run closer to the waters edge or on the softer sand?  Stuff like that and any other tips to this specific race to make it more enjoyable.

Thanks

I did the race back in 2007 and have had sever really close friends do the event every year after.  Here are my comments.

July water temps are cool.  I did it without a wetsuit the first year and was pretty cold.  However I lifeguarded in Sea Isle City and was ready for really cold July temps.  A wetsuit would really help.

The race goes off in waves.  Mostly determined by age group, etc...

Participants are a very decent mix of first time racers, weekend warriors, local age group racers, maybe a local pro or two but a very well rounded field.

First year they did the beach run heading south out to Stone Harbor and back.  Out and back run.  Mostly in the hard sand just at the waters edge.  I believe the format has changed for the last few years and it's a mix of two out and back loops.  From what I understand the only spot you'll have to run across soft sand is from the swim up to T1 and from T2 out to the waters edge and then again from the waters edge into the main finish shoot.  Overall a small fraction of the race.

Its a very well run event and fun.  If your in Avalon and you can make it I'd say go for it.  Midge runs a great race and is well respeced in the MA Tri community.

Also you can check the race forum on this site for past years race reports.  That should give you a good idea of what people went through.

Also my first and am looking forward to it.  Hope the H2O temp isn't to bad as I'm just wearing a tri top and bottom. Looks like the tides should be great for the run as long as they don't rake the beach to much.
