Age Group Rank = 3/14
Pre-race routine:

Got my stuff packed up and my friend Mike came over and we loaded up and drove over to the rez. GOt in by race transfer so I only had to pay $60 instead of $90.
Event warmup:

Got my transition spot set up right by the bike out. Talked to some folks and went for a quick ride to check out the bike finish. Got in the water just before the race and did a quick swim. THe youngsters went of first and my wave was second. SO they had a 5 minute lead.
SO I had forgotten to put the Yanks in my shoes since I hadn't done that yet, so I had to tie the shoes today in T2. Bummer, that would end up to bit me in the ass at the end.
Swim

Comments:

SO my swimming has not been up to par lately as I have not wanted to swim much. I need to change that soon. So I knew I would be behind and chasing people today. Decent swim but all the boats were out and made for a wavey swim. Great sighting today as I didn't have any issues here. Came out of the water and ran up the 150 yards or so to the transition area. Din't really hustle here, not sure why, and I also stopped on the grass to take off the wetsuit. SO my swim was probably more around 14:30. TIme to get to work!
What would you do differently?:

Swim more and run faster up the hill.

Comments:

I got out of transition well and onto the bike but took forever to get the shoes on. Pushed hard from the start as I knew there was plenty of people ahead of me to catch. Passed a few people and saw the 2 people in my age group I needed to hunt down. They were 2:45 ahead of me out of the swim. I think I rode to hard and my stomach was cramping up on both side under my rib cage. Backed it off a few times to see if I could make it go away. Beside I wanted to run well. SO no one passed me and I gained some time back on the number 2 guy in my agegroup but not 1st place guy. 1st place guy just qualified for Kona with a 10:14 at Saint George! 5th in the agegroup there. THis guy is fast. The number 2 guy is his buddy Kevin. SO I hustle into transition and drop the bike off and get ready to track em down.
What would you do differently?:

RIde more hard efforts in training. But hey that is why I raced today!
Transition 2
  • 00m 35s
Comments:

So I forgot the yanks like I said so I had to tie the shoes today or I would have been out in under 25 seconds. Still not bad . ALso forgot to put on the number belt. Dang, I forgot how to race...
What would you do differently?:

read above.
Run
  • 18m 49s
  • 3 miles
  • 06m 16s  min/mile
Comments:

Really pretty happy with this run. I do believe the course was a bit short. Ok so I set out quick to hunt people down. Caught almost everyone from the first wave except 5. Kept it hard and at mile 2 I am having some cramping again in the same place as on the bike. I didn't slow down this time. Saw who I needed to catch. We get to the last tunaround and I push past the #2 guy who looks to be hurting and fading. SO I push hard and continue to push hard up the sandy beach portion up to transition. I am going as hard as I can, and here comes #2 guy and he sprints by me. Damnit. That was all I had, I had worked so hard to get him and he out kicks me.
What would you do differently?:

Not wuss out and go harder.
Post race

I was out there also and the run was definately short.
I measured it as 2.86 miles.

I too was able to purchase a race transfer which was nice.

Great race report. It was nice to live it vicariously thru someone who is fast Smile
