I am a decent swimmer in a pool but I suck swimming in the open water. I have a hard time navigating but that is not the main issue. I can swim for a mile in a pool and not be winded - if I swim 200 yards in the open water I feel a slight panic/anxiety building. I keep looking to shore... I need to do more open water swims and swim through the fear

What would you do differently?:

I think I would actually train in the weeks prior to the event (instead of drinking beer and eating lots of pizza)

This is not your average sprint. This is a hilly and challenging course. There are some dangerous turns on the bike course but overall a well run event. This course kicked my butt and I will learn from it!

Course: This is a VERY challenging 12 miles. There are 9 and 12 degree slopes throughout the course. The first half of the course was into a headwind. The last mile is VERY challenging - UPHILL!!! This is not your average sprint course :-)
