Pre-race routine:

Well it was my sisters birthday the day before... So I ate cake, hamburgers, hotdogs(veggie dogs!) and other really healthy things the day before. I stayed at her place and really didn't sleep much at all. Otherwise I kept the lead up to the race almost identical to how I did Combat last week, since it seemed to work! :) Woke up at 4am, got up at 4:30, ate a cliff bar and a banana. Then took a gel about 30minutes before the start as I was just getting a tad hungry.
Event warmup:

2 miles slow jog about 50 minutes before the start... which got me covered in sweat since it was so lovely outside... Then I swam the swim course in reverse. Plus a 1 mile ride to the race site from my car.
Swim
  • 08m 35s
  • 600 yards
  • 01m 26s / 100 yards
Comments:

Swam a bit slow, didn't feel bad just swam slow. It's been a while since I've not been in the first swim wave, in a small field. I got boxed in a few times and had to take bad lines to avoid groups of people. Just how it goes, wouldn't call it a bad swim, felt good, stayed comfortable and relaxed which was the goal. I knew my main competition was Scott and with about 200 to go I switch to breathing to my right and I see him right there with me. We swim shoulder to shoulder the rest of the swim and come out right together.
What would you do differently?:

Been slacking on my swimming, and it shows... just slow. I do think the course was more like 600m over yards like they say. I was just slow compared to people I normally swim with. They were all 20-40s ahead of me.
Transition 1
  • 01m 4s
Comments:

Pulled a Macca with my Aero helmet not being able to buckle while I yelled at it. Lost probably 15s here.
Bike
  • 26m 7s
  • 11 miles
  • 25.27 mile/hr
Comments:

So I had come out of the water with Scott and got into t1 ahead of him, but messed up my t1 and was now behind him. However, once again I prove that having shoes already clipped in isn't always the fastest. As I brought those 10-15s I lost in transition with my helmet back in a instant while he started to put his feet into his shoes while on the bike. He re-passed me maybe a mile later and put then started to put pressure on me. Miles 1-4 I was red lining it to keep him just 10s ahead of me. I started to bring him back close to the turn around thanks to some turns(he didn't corner very well). Then after the turn around, I got three bike lengths behind him and sat there for a minute before repassing him and upping the pace again to get a gap. Ended up with maybe a 20s gap on him going into T2. Not a bad ride, but did feel like we rode a lot faster than what we did.
What would you do differently?:

Rode well, so wouldn't change much.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

No idea, once again it got combined into my run. I'd take a guess and say it was 35-40s as I wasn't super speedy.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.. I intentionally went a bit slow to get my HR down. The heat was having it's affect on me by this point in the race.
Run
  • 17m 42s
  • 3 miles
  • 05m 54s  min/mile
Comments:

Came off the bike feeling pretty good and ended up running the first mile rather fast. Still I was expecting Scott to catch me and then I would have a real hard run on my hands. I didn't extend the gap on him over the first 3/4 of a mile but then he started fading back after that. I slowed up over the 2nd mile as I really was getting rather hot, but then tried to push it again over the last mile and felt like I was running well. Once again my splits don't show what I felt like I was running, but with the heat I'm pretty happy overall. It was like running in a bathtub almost. :) Felt good for the whole race and didn't have any real problems.
Post race
Warm down:

1 mile jog

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The fact that when I got in my car at 5:10am it was 85 degrees and 98% humidity? :)
