Subject: Compare Power Tap &, Quarq w/ 310XT & LYC
I've been training and racing for last 4 years with power tap in both my training wheel and race wheel.

With my new bike I decided to go for crank based power meter and have a Quarq on order.

I was thinking after it was installed to ride with both my power tap wheel and my quarq and try to get my 310XT pick up quarq data and my power tap yellow computer pick up pt wheel data to compare them. I'm curious to compare power data and also be able to have an idea if they are close or exact.

I'm recovering from injury and surgery so when I start riding again my power will be down so not as easy to compare to my last bike testing.

Anyone know how to make the 310XT pick up one of the ant+ power meters and not the other?

As with any other ANT+ device, you need to make sure the head unit (in this case the 310) is within 3 meters or so of the intended power meter (your quarq), and no other power meters are within 10 meters.  So just put your PT wheel in another room, sync up the 310 to the quarq, then put the PT wheel on and have at it.

I would be interested in the results.  I have read that the PT wattage could be 5-10 watts less than a crank based system as some of the wattage is lost in the chain

I would swap out the back wheel if you can to a non PT rear, sync the garmin with the Quarq while the PT wheel is inactive, then put the PT wheel back on

I would be interested in seeing what you come up with also. I got an SRM earlier this year and paired it with a Garmin 500 and also with the 310XT and came up with different readings. The 310XT reads a consistent 25 watts less than the 500. I also have an Ergomo and it reads the same as the SRM with the 500. I got the 310XT for running but found it interesting that it reads lower than the other two.

That's interesting.  Have you tried looking at the second by second data to compare how each computer measured each data point?

I just kind of did a field test where I rode each one seperately over the same course at the same heart rate, one after the other. Then I rode with them both at the same time (500 mounted, 310 on wrist) to compare them. Each time the 310 was a lower reading. I have not actually downloaded each and compared them. Do not know how accruate my test was but I keep getting a lower reading on the 310. My other bike has an Ergomo and I rode it over the same course in this manner and it was consistent with the SRM.

Somewhere out in cyber space there is a write up where someone had all kinds of devices and onboard computers hooked into his bike and was doing testing and comparison data. Don't even know where to begin searching and I never book marked it but I'll see if google has any hits.

I'd be very interested in the data that comes from KathyG's testing and others as well who have mulitple measuring devices and onboard comps. But all in all the the accuracy is not so much important as the consistency of the numbers, even though deep down we all want to know how accurate our toys are.

i did this for a few weeks with a friends PT and my SRM, PT was very very consistant at 12-15 watts under the SRM for everything. (closer to 10-12 watt diff on flats, 15 on climbs/out of the saddle stuff).

My 310 and LYC, both measuring the PT, give slightly different (+/- 5 watts) numbers for the same ride.

Excellent information..thanks everyone!

I have slight difference in power data between my 310xt and little yellow computer using my PT but normally less than 5 watts more like 1-2.

Still waiting to hear when quarq comes in to do the test.

Probably won't be riding outside for 2-3 more weeks and then only zone 2 for a week or two, as I had my knee scoped a week ago.

I will report back when I do the testing.
