Bummers! Sorry to hear about your heel! Hopefully 6 weeks'll heal it for you!
Race went really well for me yesterday. I didn't drown! Hurray! And actually did a lot better than I thought I would, placed 7th in my age group, had a ridiculously fast for me bike, and the solid run that I was expecting. And hey, I wasn't even the last one out of the water in my group!
My own personal maybe goal in my head was to try to catch one of my training group's members who started 2 waves ahead of me and is a much stronger swimming/slightly seasoned triathlete/but not so great on the run. My bike time ended up being within 2 seconds of his and I passed him on the run with about 100 yds to go. Totally shocked me, but definitely exciting.
Funny thing was when I was talking to my group after the race, someone said, did that headwind screw you up coming back on Folly? First I said headwind? What headwind? I guess that's the benefit of not having a computer, I had no idea how fast I was going. Later I said, Folly? We were on Folly Rd? I had no idea where I was, I just went where they told me to.
Swim was scary at first, but after about 200 yds I settled in and was able to do my thing. It was a REALLY long way from the second to third buoy though. And that's when some of the next group passed me which I expected, but was a little sad about.
If I had registered for the Athena division I would have placed 3rd, which I qualify for, but I guess I don't feel like I'm at a disadvantage and it wouldn't be fair to others who are at more of a disadvantage because they aren't as tall as I am. Oh well.
A few people in wetsuits which I thought was odd. I guess when the water temperature is that warm
(slightly cooler than bathwater
) I see it as people just going for an advantage instead of something that is actually needed. Since I'm new to tris I'm not sure how I feel about that. If I wore a wetsuit I'd probably have cut minutes off my time, but I'd have felt funny doing it.
Anyways, good race, can't wait to do another!
