Pre-race routine:

Nothing really.. was fairly calm considering it was my first triathlon
Event warmup:

Did some arm and shoulder warm ups..choose not to get in the water due to high water temps..
Swim
  • 30m 51s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 53s / 100 yards
Comments:

For being my first tri, the time trial start was nice, I started towards the back due to a high race number, but started passing people in the beginning,I got bumped a couple of times by people out of control, but the only problem I had was the glare of the sun on the water after the final turn on trying to spot the buoys..
What would you do differently?:

Just work on my training to get faster...
Transition 1
  • 01m 23s
Comments:

T1 went well, had a problem getting into one pedal after mounting bike..
What would you do differently?:

Buy some bike shoes for triathlons..
Bike
  • 1h 17m 55s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 19.14 mile/hr
Comments:

Had a great bike ride to my standards, was able to pass a lot of people mainly on the hills, boy that training paid off here, got passed by one biker around mile 14... Overall went in wanting to average 18 mph and was able to do better, was able to get out of shoe in the last 1/4 mile to be ready for dismount..
Transition 2
  • 01m 26s
Comments:

Planned on going sock-less to save time, but felt my feet rubbing in my bike shoes, luckily I laid my socks out just in case, still feel like I made good time even with having to put socks on..
What would you do differently?:

Take fuel belt with water when it this hot..
Run
  • 1h 02m 25s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 10m 03s  min/mile
Comments:

My goal for the first one was to average a ten minute mile,I came close but after the knee surgery I can't complain..
Post race
Warm down:

Cooled down under the water tent, had several bottles of water along with a banana, watermelon, and some cookies..(they were good!!) Did some slight stretching and waited on my friends to finish...

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Just need to work on my stroke for the swim, need to do more run work where I can't cut some time here, most of the people that finished ahead of me had faster run times..

Event comments:

This was a good race to choose for my first triathlon, I will do it again and try to beat my time..( I will beat that time )

Congratulations once again Tim!  It looks like things went extremely well for you out there on the course!

89 degree what?  Holy Cow!  That must have been warm.  It sounds like overall the swim went quite well and that is a great time for your first race.  I've never done a time trial swim start, but I'm sure that really helped keep the amount of contact with other swimmers down.

As for the bike, man, you killed it!  That is a very impressive time and you're absolutely right, all your training did pay off!  Having the bike be your strong point is definitely not a bad thing considering you spend about half your time during a race on the bike.  Let's shoot for 20+ mph next year!  Smile

Terrific job having socks laid out and preparing yourself for obstacles.  That could have been a very painful run if you didn't put those socks on and I definitely think you made the right decision.  That is great stuff, especially for a newbie so way to go!

Sounds like the run went well for you too.  I wouldn't be too disappointed with being 3 seconds over your goal pace!  That is very impressive and I'm confident you can make some dramatic improvements on this leg if you spend some more time running.  However, your surgery was obviously a serious limiter.

I'm extremely impressed Tim and you really did a great job out there.  So congrats once again, triathlete!  If you keep up all the hard work, you're time is going to significantly drop in your future triathlons.  I'm very proud of you!
