Hi all-

I live in Maine near Portland and am training for my first triathlon which will be held in the beautiful Finger Lakes region of Central New York (where I grew up) in August. I have been an athlete all my life running track, playing vball in college and most recently I've taken up golf. Training for this triathlon has also re-introduced me to cycling and swimming and I'm loving both. Swimming is definitely my biggest challenge but that's what makes it so fun. There is so much room for improvement! (Hopefully I won't be dq'd for doing my version of the Esther Williams sidestroke!)

Training for a tri with three young kids (ages 6yrs, 4.5yrs and 18mo) is a great challenge. Early morning bike rides and runs get me going for the day with my kids!

Looking forward to learning from all of you!

Susan

Welcome to the site from another Mainer. There are several of us here at BT. I live just outside Augusta, and I'm in my first season of Tris (did Ironbear, Mooseman, and Shipbuilders so far).  Good luck building up your swimming - just keep at it and it will get better.

Welcome,

Good luck on your training and your participation in tri's. I spent 12 years in Brunswick in the 80's and 90's (hated the winters, enjoyed most summers and really enjoyed the falls). Maine is a pretty area for training, got some great hills around the slopes and some beautiful lakes to practice your OWS's in. Have a great time. This site is full of great info and really nice people.

Welcome, Susan.  Have you considered doing the Danskin sprint triathlon on July 31 that's in nearby Webster, MA?  I've been told it's a great first triathlon for beginners.  It's going to be my first.

Thanks, Gwendal! I'd love to do the Danskin in MA but registration for it is closed. Maybe I'll do it next year. Good luck!

Welcome to BT, Susan. It's great to see more fellow Mainers on here!!  I know Danksin in July is already closed, but the Timberman in NH is still open if you're interested in a sprint distance @ the end of August. www.timbermantri.com. That will be my third tri ever (this year is my first year...I did IronBear in May and will be doing Danskin at the end of the month). I'm hooked already - you're going to love it!

Thanks, Sarah. I checked the Timberman and that one is closed, too. I'm thinking of doing a small one in Kennebunkport but not sure yet. It's a saltwater swim and I don't know if I'm ready for that!

Do you know of any tri stores in Maine? I thought I heard of one in Brunswick but I can't find any info about it.

Midcoast multisport in Brunswick, it's right on the main street in town. trimainiac.com is their website.

Thank you Rob! I'll check it out.

Have you ever done the Firemen's Tri in Kennebunk or Kennebunkport (can't remember which!)?

Haven't done it, but I've heard it's a fun one. I think they have a big blueberry pancake breakfast afterward, which sounds great to me. I would be doing it this year, but it's the weekend after timberman, so I don't think I'll be up to it.
