Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 4:45, had a small bowl of oatmeal and started nibbling on a Clif bar. After loading up the truck with the bike, a chair, jogging stroller, baby gear, and my transition bag, we grabbed our 3-month-old girl and smoothly transferred her from crib to car seat with nary a peep. Success!!

After parking and getting over to the TA, I found a rack near the bike out (which later became both bike in and out as the RD opened up both in and out sides for either traffic) and setup. Stood in line a looong time for the porta-john and after a successful adventure in there, headed over towards swim start to catch up with my wife and some buddies.
Event warmup:

None. Probably should have ran around a little but I wasn't cold or anything so I just hung out and waited for the waves to start.

Overall a pretty good swim for me. Glad I've been regularly putting in the time at the pool this year. HR strap slipped down to my waist after about 300m so I quickly tucked it into my shorts so I wouldn't lose it completely and continued on. Guess I won't get any HR data for this race!
What would you do differently?:

Not have my HR strap fall off.
Transition 1
  • 01m 42s

Felt a bit sluggish getting out of the water but picked up speed running into TA. Put on socks, shoes, and helmet and headed for the mount line.
What would you do differently?:

Yes, I wear socks. I think it cost me 10-15 seconds. My MTB shoes are the bigger time waster here. Hoping to get actual tri shoes this year so I can put shoes on when moving rather than sitting still. That should help quite a bit. Also, tri shoes have GOT be lighter than my heavy MTB shoes.

I generally go out a bit hard on the bike and pay for it later on the run. Knowing this, I felt like I was pushing my pace a bit but I didn't feel like I was "all-out" or anything. I tried to pace myself in order to finish strong on the run and think I did ok. No real excitement on the bike. Got passed by a guy who was really moving on some nice carbon wheels but later passed him back as he limped in on a flat tubular tire for the last 2 miles or so.
What would you do differently?:

Not too much. I felt like it was a pretty good performance for me.
Transition 2
  • 00m 48s

Bike shoes off, helmet/glasses off, running shoes on, grab hat and number belt - I'm gone!
What would you do differently?:

Not pull right shoe lace so tight. Had to stop for a second early int eh run to loosen it a little. This was the first time using yankz on these race shoes so I guess there was my learning curve. Not a bad problem.

I left TA with 2 guys in sight of me that I thought I might have a chance at chasing down. Unfortunately, it took my a good mile or so to get my running legs under me but I still had them in sight. I began to gain on the first guy by mile 2 and then passed him shortly after as my pace was increasing from 7:30 to 6:20. I knew I wouldn't be able to catch the other guy but I kept running strong anyway. Felt good to be able to negative split on a run for once!
What would you do differently?:

More brick workouts. I think my last brick was at the Longhorn 70.3 last October!
Post race
Warm down:

Water, pizza, getting drooled on by my baby girl.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

When comparing my splits with others ahead of me, it looks like my swim could definitely use some improvement. Wife and I have already discussed joining an adult stroke technique class this year. Also need to start hitting the bricks.

Event comments:

Great local race, awesome for first-timers!
