Pre-race routine:

Saturday race was awkward. Worked Friday, drove up, ate, got to bed a bit after 10pm. Up just after 4pm.

My daughter has been congested the past week or so, for me the last 2-3 days coughing up some solid phlegm. Otherwise felt good.
Event warmup:

Sitting. Waiting. Quick swim.

Not the ideal breakfast but got in my calories.
Swim
  • 40m 45s
  • 2112 yards
  • 01m 56s / 100 yards
Comments:

I started timidly yet again, and got caught behind a slow group. Eventually someone broke free and I drafted. Slow going on the way out. After the first turn I took off. At some point on the way in a few fish from the group behind me, tried to draft but could not keep up. Eventually the front of the main pack caught up and I fell in with them.

Some boat was a bit to close to the swimmers as there was a nice diesel smell.
What would you do differently?:

Be more aggressive. I thought I had a pretty good swim past the first 1/3. Need to have more confidence in my ability to swim.
Transition 1
  • 01m 58s
Comments:

Nothing special.
What would you do differently?:

Go faster.
Bike
  • 2h 56m 15s
  • 58 miles
  • 19.74 mile/hr
Comments:

I would say that the course was poorly marked. Basically keep going unless you saw someone. I think that drafting was high. For the first half of the 1st loop I saw people every 5-10min either passing or being passed always in a group of 2-3.

On the second lap however a few guys riding solo in skisuits and TT booties went flying past.

All of the intersections were police controlled, one of them was backed up with traffic that was blocking on the left. 15 cars deep, so I slowly rode past on the left on the yellow line and when I got close to the intersection I was waved across by a police officer. On the 2nd lap I knew what to do there.

Saw people killing themselves, not killing hills out there. Standing and swaying all around just to barely hang over the top of their bars at the top. I did not stand once, sat a few times.
What would you do differently?:

Push more?
Transition 2
  • 01m 47s
What would you do differently?:

Go faster.
Run
  • 1h 54m 38s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 08m 45s  min/mile
Comments:

Weird. First two miles I passed 20+ people. People were walking within the first 10min. I had one lady run past me early on and some 'kid' sprint past he was flying. From 55min to 1:22 into the run, I ran alone with not a person in front of me. Continued passing until I started to fade at the end.

I got passed by 2-3 people after mile 11.

I was also surprised that towards the end people were running on both sides of the road.

Up until mile 8-9 I felt awesome.
What would you do differently?:

Get in another long run or two.
Post race
Warm down:

Sat. Drank some juice. Laid down. Drank water. Sat in an ice bath. Got some stretching performed by people who I thought were giving massages.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Heat towards the end of the swim. Lack of bike endurance.

Event comments:

Aid stations were plentiful, but they could have used more volunteers at them. Another 2-3 people would have been nice. Thankfully on the run I was alone and could yell what I wanted as I approached.

Good race, but stretch vs massage? Ice bath was nice.

Solid Race Aaron.  But it didn't sound as challenging or as much fun as THE REVOLUTION!!!

Looks like a solid race to me.  I'd love to have that bike split.

Nice race on a pretty challenging course on a hot day.  And for those who don't know the bike is actually 58 so that split is even better than it looks.  Great job.
