![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Ive been away from tri's and distance running for almost 10 years now when I was in my late teens and early 20's I had run a few olympic dist tri's done a few full marathons and did a lot of longer distance running since Ive been back running for the past 3 months now I sometimes experience extreme dizzyness almost like a movement sickness type of feeling while running and it usually happens when I get to about 15mins into my run (and Im not even close to feeling winded or tired) also the weird thing is this only happens lately when I run outdoors when I run on treadmills and do treadmill workouts I never experience this when I bike for a few hours at a time I never experience this I have read a few internet posts about "footstrike anemia" or footstrike hemolysis as its also referred to I do notice since Im back running Im really only running at around an 8 minute mile pace (years ago I had no problems running at a 6 minute pace for 5K runs) and I do notice Im running more on my heels than I did in the past Im considering getting those Vibram shoes to help correct the issue of heel striking, and Im going to consider running barefoot on the beach or a track to correct the heel striking issue Im just looking for any honest opinions on the Vibram shoes or any opinions or input on this problem Im experiencing its very aggravating especially I just did a race yesterday and I was 2nd overall in my division on the bike but got killed on the run because I had this dizzy issue right around the 2 mile mark and had to really slow down almost to a walk which killed my time for the event also as a side note I had bloodwork done by my regular doctor and everything checked out just fine, he's not sure what the issue might be and didnt really have any helpful answers on what I could do to correct the issue so any suggestions are more than welcome I dont want this to hinder me in future races and training like it has been for the last 3 months since I started training again |

![]() | ![]() Honestly, I highly doubt your footstrike is causing dizziness. Is it hot where you're running? How is your hydration? |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() no too hot high 80's Ive tried running at different times of the day, morning, evenings etc. I stay consistently hydrated every day cause I do train about 5 days a week, between strength training and tri specific training I know Im definitely not dehydrated Ive also been taking an iron supplement for about 2 months now and that has not helped either Its really starting to get annoying cause I do continue to train and run, and I have to usually stop my run and wait for they dizzy feeling to pass, and then when I start to run again I have to run at a slower pace than I prefer, I dont feel any physical fatigue when this happens just the dizzy feeling |

Try running a route near a drug store and check it there when you get dizzy. I take a couple of meds that are often used to reduce hypertension but as I have a normal BP the result is I often have it drop too low when I exercise and then I do get dizziness, touch of nausea, etc.. My 2 cents. Ive tried running at different times of the day, morning, evenings etc.

![]() Are you eating something high carbohydrate within the hour before your run? If so, you might want to look into exercise induced hypoglycemia. That dizziness in the first 15 minutes is what led me to this suggestion. If you do want to take in carbs before your run, you could do it within the 15 minutes prior to starting. Better yet, add some protein to your pre-run meal. |

If so what is your heart rate? Could be you're just pushing too hard. |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() guys thanks for the replies this is driving me crazy I dont run at different elevations I just went for a run tonight and sure enough it happened again right around 16 mins into the run my heart rate when I started to run was about 171 ish and then settled down to about 162-165 this was my first time using a heart rate monitor so I have to get a little familiar with it I didnt see exactly what it was when I started to get the dizzy feeling, (it was dark out and there wasnt much light where I was running and no light button on the monitor either) Im going to try and find a good ear, nose, throat dr. and see what he has to say about the issue I havent had any ear infections at all that I can recall |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() When you say you get dizzy, do you get light headed and about to pass out.? Or do you feel as though your surroundings are moving or that you are spinning or whirling? If it is the latter, it could be vertigo. |

![]() | ![]() I have had this same problem and have seen top ENT specialists to try to figure it out with no luck. I can run for miles on the treadmill, but could only run about 1.5 miles outside. I recently went to an upper cervical chiropractor for some neck issues and through xrays found that I had a slight reverse curve in my neck. That, plus improper atlas alignment, can create tension and pressure on nerves - so, if the wrong nerve is irritated, it can make the brain think you are dizzy. We theorized that the harder outside surface was the reason I got dizzy only when outside. Also the treadmill does alter position and footstrike so the concussion is reduced. It has been about three months and through adjustments and some exercises to return my neck to it's correct curve I am seeing some results!! Last night I ran 4 continuous miles!! It was on an indoor track, but I'm hopeful that the chiro work is helping and I'll soon be running outside and doing tri's soon! The thing is to go to an Upper Cervical Specialist, I found mine at upcspine.com. It requires some work and some time off from running. It may not happen right away, but it is worth it to run again and not be on a treadmill! |
