Subject: Heart Rate question

Yesterday during a 7 mile trail race.  Twice going up a steep portion of the run, my HR went up to 180s +.  188 on the first one and 183 later.   Not for long, probably a minute or so of running.  Did not feel totally spent, and was able to recover once the course leveled out.

Is that a good thing that my HR went that high?  I'm 47.  My average HR for the race was175.

Typically, for that short of a period of time (with a reasonable level of fitness) an extremely high HR will not cause much problems.

However, when you say is that a good thing... well, that depends.

If your trying to build a base, you would be better served by not driving your HR so high.
If your trying to improve speed (and some would say muscular endurance), a interval of higher HR may be of some value.

A lot depends upon what your training objectives are... plus, what is your current aerobic base.

Well that is the confusion that I have (I'm so CONFUSED !!<img align='middle' src='https://beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/images/emoticons/surprise.gif'>)  I haven't see that peak for a long long time, maybe last year at finishing sprint of a 5 K race.    I would like to think all my training this spring/summer has enabled me to do this and not collapse (hardly any speed work).

So now that I think about it, If I was able to do the average of 175 and some peaks at 180+ .  I should have pushed the pace a little more.  In other words, I feared the pain/exertion and didn't get the full potential.    I must have been holding back.    Steve Prefontaine would have kicked my arse.
