bmcgee - 2010-06-29 3:09 PM I've always figured it was so that athletes can take care of packet pickup or expo or drive the course on Saturday and be more prepared for Sunday.  Also, Saturday is not a work day for most...so easier to rest up for the big event.

this ^^

as well as organizing volenteers, it's easier for people to drive on sat to the event, find a hotel.  Race permits for sunday mornings are easier to secure/handle.

But I understand,, I do quite a bit with my church and it puts them in a bind when I"m out,  Luckily we have enough volunteers that we can switch weekend duties around some

I'm not a big fan of organized religion anymore.

You'd love the church where I pastor. We're about as disorganized as you can get!

BuDu Racing, in the Seattle area, has a fairly full calendar of events, and all but one are on Saturdays. So it just depends on the area and RD's.

jwmather - 2010-06-29 3:59 PM Greetings.  I've only recently done my first triathlon, and I've fallen in love the sport.  I'm trying desperately to hit as many events as I can this season, but it seems as though most of them within driving distance are all on Sunday... which presents a problem for me.  I've got a great deal of responsibility within my church, which naturally occupies my time on Sunday mornings.  The race I was able to do earlier this month was held on a Saturday, about 180 miles outside of town, so my friend and I were able to drive out Friday night and get back home by Saturday afternoon.

So my question is essentially, "why Sunday?"  I understand that this topic likely won't concern some (or most) folks, but it's frustrating for me, considering the circumstances.   I really want to embrace this sport, and do my best to excel in it... but not at the expense of honoring God by setting apart Sunday mornings for Him.

Thanks in advance...

-- Johnny

My first tri experience involved helping set up and take down the race site.

Saturday make a LOT of sense for getting the people and gear in place to set up for a race.

All those barricades and racks and buoys take considerable time to get in place.  Weekends also have less traffic so those two days make the most sense as well as the fact that most people work M-F, so volunteers AND racers are better available on weekends

So set up Sat, race Sun.  Makes sense enough to me.

Has to be more to it though.  Same guys I helped set up KC for Sunday had the Topeka Tinman on a  Saturday.  Something else going on there and I don't know what.

Have to agree.  Before I volunteered to help set up a race, I had no idea how much work it was!!  Wow...the race crews do so much on Saturday!  It would be a lot harder to get enough people there on a Friday to do the same thing, so it would take even longer for a smaller group of people.

The only reason I would like it on a saturday is so that after the race i can have more than a few beers and not wake up the next day and have to go to work.
