Subject: Sunday? ...Why Sunday?!
Greetings.  I've only recently done my first triathlon, and I've fallen in love the sport.  I'm trying desperately to hit as many events as I can this season, but it seems as though most of them within driving distance are all on Sunday... which presents a problem for me.  I've got a great deal of responsibility within my church, which naturally occupies my time on Sunday mornings.  The race I was able to do earlier this month was held on a Saturday, about 180 miles outside of town, so my friend and I were able to drive out Friday night and get back home by Saturday afternoon.

So my question is essentially, "why Sunday?"  I understand that this topic likely won't concern some (or most) folks, but it's frustrating for me, considering the circumstances.   I really want to embrace this sport, and do my best to excel in it... but not at the expense of honoring God by setting apart Sunday mornings for Him.

Thanks in advance...

-- Johnny

I've thought about this as well, the only answer I can come up with that makes logical sense is the comparative lack of traffic on Sunday as compared to Saturday...

ETA: Doesn't make me happy to miss church on Sunday, but at least my church (Methodist) has a Saturday evening option...

I have always thought that they are held on Sundays because it is easier to deal with trafic on a Sunday morning. Road closures/restrictions and what not.

A local RD has stated that it's when there is the least amount of traffic on the roads, but her races all start at 7 am and I'm not sure why it would be any different on a Saturday morning.  I go out of my way to find Saturday events, for the same reason.  I'm looking forward to hearing what veteran racers and RDs may say.

Well, there are only two days available, so there's a 50/50 chance of holding these on Sundays.  I'm sure if it were held on Saturdays plenty of people would have complaints for that too.  Can't please everybody...

So my sabbath is saturday and lots of races are ones that my first season I chose not to do.

I have decided that racing is spiritual for me so I race on Shabbat.

Most of my races, this year, will be Sunday events.  I've wondered "why not Saturday", also.  The best reason I can figure is, it gives people who might work on their feet, during their normal work week, a chance to get off them for a day - before the event.  Just a guess, though.

While I understand your feelings towards Church, I also think honoring your maker - by showing off what he's given you is a GREAT testimony!  My feelings are, he'd understand!

I'm an avid bowhunter.  The late Fred Bear once said "When a hunter is in a treestand with high moral values and with proper ethics, that hunter is 20' closer to God".  I have my best conversations with him, in his back yard.  No reason you can't.

Good luck.

Most triathlons involve an overnight stay and or travel. Much easier, for the majority, to travel on Saturday than friday night after work....

I've always figured it was so that athletes can take care of packet pickup or expo or drive the course on Saturday and be more prepared for Sunday.  Also, Saturday is not a work day for most...so easier to rest up for the big event.

Our church also has a Saturday evening service option, but that may not be the case with your church.  Could you serve at your church on Sunday evenings instead?

These are just my guesses.

Most triathletes are in the 35-49 age range.  So many of them have kids...most youth activities such as organized sports, piano lessons, swimming classes, dance classes, etc are going to be held on Saturday versus Sunday.  If parents are occupied with their kids activities on Saturday...they can't race.

Traffic where I live is much lighter on Sunday compared to Saturday.  Therefore it's easier for a race to close roads.

If a business is going to be closed one day a week, it's going to be Sunday.  Again...more people are off work (most triathletes have jobs), and less traffic.

Keep in mind though, that some of the bigger events, like 70.3's and IMs are indeed held on Saturday.  Mainly because it takes so much time to tear down the race setup.  IM's go until midnight...so it's difficult to tear everything down and have the roads reopened for Monday morning traffic.  But it is understood when you sign up for a 70.3 or an IM that you are going to put everything aside for this race, and this race takes priority over your work schedule, your kids schedule, and locals understand if roads are closed down on Saturday because the event boosts the economy.

For smaller local races...they just have to do what they can to maximize turnout, and minimize the impact as far as closing roads.

If I had to guess, I'd say races are on the day easiest for the RD to arrange.   I bet parks are booked for events on Saturday, it's hard to get police officers, etc.   I haven't done a survey, but in an area like the Twin Cities we have a LOT of races and they are on both days.  I prefer Saturday simply so that I have the weekend ahead still without having to worry about a race.   Then again, a "far" races for me is 40 miles, so it's easier here generally speaking.

I too prefer Saturday races so that I can still use Sunday as a hard training day.

Also, most people who have every been an RD will tell you that you are more likely to get volunteers on a Saturday to be ready for the Sunday race than you would be able to get volunteers on Friday afternoon/evening for the setup.

I figured long ago that God gave me athletic skills/body for a reason, so when I train/compete/race I am honoring Him. Thus, my church is on the roads, in the gym, anywhere that I am improving my athletic capability.

I tell people that ask, that I worship at the church muscular. There are those that get what I mean, and others that just believe I am a misguided heathen. Tongue out

I'm not a big fan of organized religion anymore.

I sympathize. Luckily, I bet your church duties are more important to you than triathlon! I wish there were more options for you but for now just do your best to find those Saturday races!
I am sure you all have heard this saying before but I will say it again:
Better to be on your bike thinking about God than in church thinking about your bike!

This is what I was thinking - also along the lines of easier to get permits from the local municipality to close roads because there will be less traffic disruptions.

The couple of tri race series in our area generally have events both on Saturday and Sunday ... some distances one day and others the next. Lucky us.

I have to go with lighter traffic and packet pick-up as the main reasons for a Sunday event.  Most marathon / half marathons are also held on a Sunday for the same reason.

If you had packet pick-up, bike check, body marking, bike/run/swim warm-ups all in the morning I'm thinking the normal organized chaos would become pretty much just chaos for everyone.

I'm paraphrasing an athlete's quote that I heard some time ago that really struck a chord in me when I was thinking about what would be more important, sitting in church or giving everthing I had in a competition.
"While I can't speak for the creator as to whether I should attend service or be out on the field, I feel him guiding me as I compete on the Sabbath, giving me strength to finish and show he loves me no matter if I am on the field of play or sitting in a pew."

If others in my church can't accept the fact that I am not going to be there every Sunday I could care less. This is between the Creator and myself.

Good luck in your soul searching...

How many races per year are you planning? I can't imagine you are going to miss more than 10-15% of your Sundays at Church, are you?

I understand Church is very important to you (and you to your Church as well), not trying to minimize that or knock it at all.
