Total Time = 1h 39m 41s
Overall Rank = 121/128
Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 8/9
Pre-race routine:

Got up at 3:30..way too early-couldn't sleep.
Drank 2 cups of coffee and had cereal with soy milk.
We arrived very early so I had plenty of time to use the bathroom a few times because I had too much coffee!
Event warmup:

jogged/walked for about 10 minutes.
It was cold and windy on the beach. I wasn't using a wetsuit so I just couldn't make myself do a warm up swim.
Swim
  • 11m 32s
  • 500 yards
  • 02m 19s / 100 yards
Comments:

The water was very rough. It was tough going straight out to the 1st bouy. It was more like a survival swim. Going across was ok but I ended up doing the sidestroke most of the time. I did freestyle less than 1/4 of the course, which was disappointing.
Kathy G sent me a message about the sharp shells on the beach so I wore my scuba booties-thanks Kathy!
What would you do differently?:

I guess I could practice swimming in rough ocean water which is not a problem because I live close to the ocean.. I don't really want to though because its a little scary.
I think a wetsuit may have helped.
Transition 1
  • 02m 8s
Comments:

Since this was my first time I didn't rush through the transition. I was wearing booties because of the sharp shells on the beach. This was great because my feet were nice and clean when I took them off!
What would you do differently?:

Go faster
Bike
  • 46m 55s
  • 11 miles
  • 14.07 mile/hr
Comments:

I was pretty slow on my hybrid bike and I was alone most of the time. I was afraid to really push it. I thought I needed to save some energy for the run. Quite a few of the runners shouted words of encouragement to me, which was awesome!
What would you do differently?:

Push it! Ride more often.
Transition 2
  • 00m 39s
Comments:

I biked with my running shoes so I didn't have much to do. I did grab my chapstick.
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Run
  • 38m 28s
  • 3 miles
  • 12m 49s  min/mile
Comments:

Running is new to me so I am pleased with this time. I stopped to walk for a few minutes 3-4 times. The cool weather was a bonus for the run.
What would you do differently?:

Run more
Post race
Warm down:

Walked a bit. Hugged my kids, husband and dog. Drank some gatorade and had ice cream. We had to leave early to go to a family party.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

This was my first triathlon, actually it was my first athletic event ever! So I was very happy to just finish. I was even happier when I realized I wasn't last!

Event comments:

I was suprised that they didn't issue race numbers or do body marking as I assumed all races did. All we had was the timing chip on the ankle. Being a newbie I don't know much about those things.
It was great meeting 2 people from BT, Kathy G and Nomadicdawn, both beat me by the way. Great job guys!

Awesome first race! Like you said, that water was rough. Impressive you did swim with no  wetsuit! When's the next tri?

Sounds like you had a great time for your first time out - your first time is always a bit of an experiment and you did great!
