Well, I got it done.  I finished Western States in a bit over 28 hours.  It was quite a challenge for a flatlander like me.  Did it with no crew and no pacer, having never seen the course before race day.  Apparently that's slightly unusual.

I haven't written a race report yet, but here's some video I shot along the way.  If you want a feel for what Western States looks and feels like from the runners' perspective, this should give you a good taste.  Enjoy!

Steve, you are one lucky man to run that course!  WS is on my bucket list.  That's great video, what camera were you using?  I heard you say it's also waterproof?

Lucky man, indeed!I was using a Kodak Playsport. It competes nicely with Flip Video, and yes it's waterproof. This was my first time using it, and I'm pretty happy with it.

"Lucky Man" is one way to describe it, super strong and motivated and amazing is another. Just toeing the line of WS takes a ton of work and volunteering and qualifying. Then, turning in a sub-30 is just incredible.

I hope to run it some day, but not for a few years yet (until I finish my first IM and do another 50 miler)!

Thanks for sharing the video with us, Steve.  Very cool!  Congrats on the WS finish.

(i knew 4 people doing WS this year, and oddly enough, i saw 2 of them in your video, just as you were getting to the top of the initial climb.  what are the odds?!)

Hi Karl,

Glad you enjoyed it.

My friend, Dom (Dominic Guinta), got it done.  He finished around 29:30-ish.  He found himself very sleepy as the night wore on, and literally starting taking naps at some of the aid stations.  But, he was able to pull himself together and push on to the finish.  He's training for Wasatch now, which should be even tougher.

Did he do the VT100? Is he trying to Grand Slam this year?
